Attach the yarn you want to use for embroidery to a crochet needle, making a common slip knot.
    • The crochet needle should be about the size of the one you used to knit the stitch you are embroidering on.
    • To make a slip knot:
      • Make a knot by crossing the loose end of the yarn underneath the attached end.
      • Grab the attached side and pull it through the knot, thus creating a second knot.
      • Tighten the first knot around the second.
      • Insert the hook into the second knot and tighten it onto the needle.
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Carefully remove the slip knot from the hook.Place the knot on the back of the shirt, then insert the needle into the nearest slot and clip the knot.Pull the slip knot on the front of the shirt.
    • The knot must remain on the back of the shirt.
    • The point where you pass the knot should be the position where you want to start the embroidery.
  3. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
With the slipknot still on the needle, pass it through the slot near the adjacent stitch.
    • The adjacent point to the right, left, above or below will do.It could also be diagonal to the starting point. The "adjacent" stitch will simply be the closest stitch you will need to create the embroidery you have in mind.
    • With this step you will begin the first slipped stitch.
  4. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
At the back of the work, wrap the yarn onto the hook in a counter-clockwise motion.Thread the loop of yarn over the front of the shirt.
    • In this way you will continue making the slipped stitch, but without completing it.
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Pull the new knot you just created through the loop of the original slip knot, letting the slip knot fall from the hook.
    • The new knot should then be the only one left on the hook.
    • This way you will have completed the first slipped stitch.
    • You may want to hold the knot or slip knot base stationary at the back of the stitch while you create the first slipped stitch. This way you will create a straight, precise and tight stitch.
  6. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Create a second slipped stitch with the same technique you used to make the first.
    • Insert the hook into the empty space after the next stitch, holding the knot on the needle as you work.
    • Thread the hook from the back of the stitch, wrapping it anti-clockwise.
    • Pull the yarn over the front and through the knot on the hook. The previous knot should slip off the hook and you should end up with a new knot on the needle.
  7. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Continue repeating the process until your desired embroidery is complete.
  8. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
After making the last stitch of the embroidery, carefully remove the hook from the knot.Insert the hook back into the back of the work, thus gathering the knot and pulling it to the back.
    • Make sure the knot stays open once the hook is removed.
  9. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Cut the thread, leaving a tail about 7.5 cm long.Pull through the knot on the hook, dropping it and securing the thread.
    • Weave the excess end onto the back of the piece, hiding it underneath the slip stitch embroidery on the front. This will make the embroidery more resistant and hide the excess thread.

  1. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Pass one end of the thread through the eye of a large needle.Do not knot the thread.
    • Instead of knotting the thread, you should pass a 10cm long tail through the loop.Pull the tail against the eye of the needle as you work, to keep the thread in place.
    • If the thread comes out of the needle while you are embroidering, thread it again and start working again.
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Cut a piece of wire long enough for the project.Tie it to the freshly cut end of the thread.
    • The thread should be a little longer than the total length of the finished embroidery.
    • You won't need a slipknot.A simple knot will work just fine.
    • Make sure the knot is larger than the gap between the crochet stitches.A loose knot will prevent the embroidery from unraveling.
  3. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Pass the needle through the first space at the beginning of the pattern, pulling it from the back to the front of the shirt.
    • Pull the thread all the way until the knot hangs on the back of the shirt.
  4. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Skip an entire crochet stitch, then insert the needle into the empty space on the opposite side of the stitch you skipped.
    • Pass the needle through the back of the fabric.Continue pulling until the embroidery thread touches the material.
    • If you prefer, you can make a longer stitch by passing the needle past more than one stitch on the hook before reinserting it into the stitch.
    • This way you will have completed a running stitch.
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Cross another single stitch on the back, then feed it into the gap on the opposite side.Pass the needle through the front, thus also pulling the thread.
    • This will start a new stitch.
    • Make sure the thread on the back of the shirt is flat against the material once the needle is pulled.
    • If you prefer, you can change the space between points by skipping more than a single point.
  6. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Continue in the same way until you reach the end of the drawing.
    • Skip a whole stitch on the front, then pass the needle through the back.
    • Skip a whole stitch on the back, then pass the needle through the front.
  7. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
If left like this, the running stitch will create a dotted line, giving the embroidery a more "stitched" appearance. If you want to create a more continuous line, you can go over the first line with a second one.
    • In practice you will have to go over the first line backwards, reversing the embroidery stitches.Once you reach a visible point on the top of the fabric, make a visible point on the back. For each stitch visible on the back, make a stitch on the front.
  8. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Once you reach the end of the embroidery, insert the needle into the fabric on the front and pull it to the back.Tie the thread in a loose knot to complete the embroidery.
    • Here too, a simple knot will suffice.Make sure it is large enough so that it doesn't slip into the cracks in the material.
    • You can trim the excess thread or weave it onto the back of the material. But make sure it isn't visible on the front.

French knot[4] [5]

  1. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Cut a piece of wire about 25cm long.Knot one end and thread the other end through the eye of a large sewing needle.
    • Thread about 10cm of thread through the eye of the needle, to prevent it from slipping out as you work.
    • For this step, a simple knot will suffice.Do not use a slip knot.
    • The knot will need to be large enough not to slip into the slots of the hook, so as to prevent it from popping out while you embroider.
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Thread the needle through the back of the material, where you want to make the French knot.Pull the needle and thread to the front.
    • You should place the needle between the stitches of the crochet stitch.
    • Continue pulling the thread until the overhand knot at the end of the length touches the back of the stitch.
  3. With the index finger and thumb of your non-dominant hand, pinch the thread 3 to 4 inches above the surface of the material.
    • Place the side of the needle against the thread, between your fingers and the surface of the material.
  4. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Using your non-dominant hand, wrap the thread around the needle two to four times.
    • While you do this, continue to keep the thread pinched. You will need to maintain good tension to prevent the thread from coming undone.
    • The number of times you wrap the thread will change the thickness of the French knot. The more you wrap the thread, the looser the French knot will be.
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Choose a point directly near the exit, but not coinciding.Empty space from an adjacent point will do just fine.
    • Do not stick the needle into the material yet.
    • Don't use exactly the same hole.It is very likely that the knot will end up coming out of the back of the fabric once the operation is finished.
  6. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Use your non-dominant hand to pull the thread down, tightening the spiral.
    • Continue pulling until the spiral wraps around itself, tightening on the top of the hook material.
  7. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Pull the needle all the way through the fabric.
    • The needle and dangling tail should pass through the center of the spiral, tying it into a decorative knot.
  8. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare su un Lavoro all'Uncinetto
Tie another overhand knot on the back of the material to secure the French knot on the opposite side.
    • Trim the rest of the end, if you prefer, or weave it onto the back of the hook to hide it.

Advice

  • Decide what to “draw” before you begin. It may be helpful to sketch the design on a piece of paper. You can also use a pre-built template found online or in an embroidery magazine, if you don't have a specific idea in mind.
  • Sew in the gaps between the original crochet stitches. If you pass between the threads of the individual stitches, the result may be untidy.Furthermore, keeping the embroidery thread in the empty spaces between the crochet threads will make it possible to untie the stitches in case of a mistake.
  • Don't make too tight stitches.Pull the embroidery stitch only until the thread touches the fabric.Pulling the thread too tight could cause the hook to bunch up, or even fray the thread.
  • Hold the needle at the buttonhole while embroidering. This will prevent the thread from slipping off.
