Making a book using paper is easy and fun.You can use it as a diary, notebook, or give it to someone as a gift.Creating a diary with your own hands will allow you to customize its pages and cover, as well as save significantly on purchasing a ready-made one. This is also a great craft activity for children.
-
Fold a sheet of paper into eight parts. Spend some time making the folds, as the quality of the book will depend on their quality.[1]
- Make sure you flatten the creases well. You can help by running your fingernail or something hard, such as a pencil, over it.
- Start by folding the paper along the long side, so that it is long and narrow.
- Then fold it in half along the short side.
- Fold the paper in half from the short side once again.
-
Open the sheet. You will notice a division into eight panels. These will become the pages of your book.
-
Fold the paper along the short side. Unlike what you did at the beginning, now fold the paper in half along the short side.
-
Cut the sheet. Position the paper so that the folded edge is facing you. Then cut it along the line located in the middle of the sheet, created by the vertical fold, up to the point where it crosses with the line formed by the horizontal fold.
- Be careful not to cross the horizontal line. You are simply making a slit in the paper, you don't have to cut all the way through.
-
Open the sheet. Now on the sheet there will be the eight panels that you obtained with the folds made previously, but in the middle, between the four central panels, there will be a crack.
-
Fold the paper in half along the long side. Repeat the first fold you made. The part of the sheet you cut should be in the center of the folded edge.
-
Fold the paper into a book shape. Turn the paper over so the cut edge is facing up, then push the two ends together, moving the two center lines away from each other.[2]
- You will need to reverse the direction of the fold of one of the two lines.
- Push the two ends together until you see 4 "wings" branching out from the center, like a cross or an X.[3]
-
Flatten your book. Choose two adjacent "wings" of the sheet and push them together, enclosing the other pages of the book inside them.
-
Bind the pages. If you want the book to keep this shape it is best to bind it using staples or a string (see the "Binding your Book" method, below).Advertising
-
Decide how many pages your book will have. The number of pages in your book will determine how many sheets you will need to use.To obtain a book containing 12 to 24 pages (including the title page), you will need 6 to 12 sheets.
- Having a clear idea of what you want to use the book for will help you decide on the most suitable number of pages.
- Also consider adding a sheet of paper to use as a cover, colored or a particular type of paper.
- You can use more than 12 sheets, but binding more pages may be more difficult.
-
Choose the paper for your book. Using ordinary white printer paper is fine, but you can also choose a different type:it all depends on what you want to use the book for.
- In this guide we will use A4 format sheets (210 x 297 mm), but other formats will also work well.
- Heavier weight (thickness) paper may last longer than regular printer paper.
- If your intention is to give the book as a gift, use a higher quality type of paper or colored sheets:you will obtain an aesthetically more beautiful result.
- If possible, do not use lined paper. With other types of paper you would get a nice book, but not with this one, because the lines would be vertical.
-
Fold the paper in half. Now that you have chosen the paper, fold each sheet along the short side.[4]
- Instead of folding all the sheets at once, do this on each individual sheet, which will give you sharper folds and smoother lines.
- Make sure the edges of the sheets are well aligned before folding.
- Perfect the crease by running your nail or a hard object, such as a pen or pencil, over it.
-
Place the various pages of the book one inside the other. Insert the sheets folded in half one inside the other. If you have more than 6 sheets available, use a maximum of 6 to create a group of pages.
- By inserting more than 6 sheets one inside the other, the internal pages will begin to protrude further than the others and the book will not have a neat appearance.
- If you have an even number of sheets, try creating groups of book sections that are even (for example:2 sets of 6 sheets, 3 sets of 4 sheets, or 4 sets of 3 sheets).
-
Staple the sections of your book. If you want to get a sturdier book it is better to staple each of the sections it will consist of.Place staples (at least 2) as close to the edge of each section as possible.
- Try to space out the staples so that when you bind the sections together, you don't end up with bumps from placing the staples in a single stack.
- Depending on the binding technique you will use, this step may not be necessary. It will be if you want to bind the sections with tape.
-
Align the sections of your book. Make sure you carefully align the various sections of your book and position them so that the folded edge is on the same side.
- Align the edges well.If any of the pages are sticking out, the paper may not have been folded accurately and you will need to replace it with a better folded one.

-
Put a cover on your book. Choose a sheet of paper to use to make the cover of the book.Consider using colored paper or a thicker sheet.Otherwise you can decorate the cover using stamps or stickers, or give it other personal touches.[5]
- Prepare the cover of your book by folding it in half along the short side and tracing the fold well.
- Depending on the type of binding you choose, the moment in which you will have to put the cover on top of the pages will change.
-
Join the book pages with tape. This method is especially useful if your book has several sections of pages stapled together.
- Cut a piece of heavy-duty tape, such as duct tape, so it's just a little longer than your book.
- Carefully place it on the front of the spine of the book and wrap it all the way to the back, so that there is half the tape on the front page and half on the back page.
- Cut off the excess tape on the top and bottom of the book.
-
Secure the cover to your book with tape. If you want to attach a cover to the sections of the book that you've bound together using tape, start by placing it (folded) over them.
- Cut two pieces of tape the same length as the book.
- Fold the tape in half lengthwise with the sticky side up.
- Open your book from the bottom and place the tape along the crease of the inside of the cover. One portion of the tape will be on the inside of the cover and the other on the outside of the last page of the book.
- Open the front of your book.Place the second piece of tape (also folded lengthwise and with the sticky side facing outward) along the crease between the inside of the cover and the outside of the first page of the book.
- Close the book and pass your hand firmly along the folded edge to secure the parts where you have applied the adhesive tape.
-
Use string or ribbon to bind your book. With this method there is no need to staple individual sections of the book together or join them with tape.
- If you want to put a cover, fold it and place it on top of the sections of the book you have stacked.
- Use a hole punch to punch holes in the entire book where you want to bind it.Punch holes near the folded edge, being careful not to pierce the spine of the book where the fold is.
- Make at least two holes. You can make more if you want, but make sure they are the same distance apart so that the binding is aesthetically pleasing.
- If you have more than 6 sheets, it is best to punch each section of the book separately, but be sure to punch the holes in the same places, so the holes will be well aligned when you join the sections.
- For journals with only a few pages, try placing decorative bookmarks in the holes.[6]
- Thread a string (or ribbon) through the holes in the book and tie it tightly.Twist the string in and out through the various holes, then run it down the back cover of the book, along the spine, and knot it.Alternatively you can make small bows on each hole by threading the string through the hole and tying it around the spine of the book.[7]
- For journals with many pages, consider stitching sections of the book together using heavy-duty thread. After you punch each section, pass the needle and thread in and out through the various holes until you have tied all the sections together.[8]
