Piercing a conch shell can be a complex operation, regardless of what you use it for (making a necklace or a wind chime).Using an electric drill can be dangerous and difficult, and the risk is breaking the shell making it unusable. This tutorial shows how to pierce a conch shell easily and safely.

Steps
-
Select your shell. Keep the following values in mind:
- Thickness:a thin shell breaks much easier, but obviously a thicker shell is harder to pierce and takes longer.
- Dimensions:a large shell is easier to work with but may not be right for your project.
- Layers:some shells are made up of multiple layers.Removing the surface layer can reveal an even more beautiful and shiny underlying layer.
-
Choose where to make the hole. Make sure you have enough space to get the hole the size you want.Remember that the closer the hole is to the edge of the shell, the greater the chance of a breakage.
-
Mark the location of the hole by making a small dot with a marker.
-
Take a pair of scissors or a small knife and use them to scrape the surface of the shell in the chosen position, creating a trace 1-2 millimeters deep. Be very careful in this step.
-
Place the sharp side of the tool used at the deepest point of the trace you just created.
-
Now rotate the tool slowly, applying light pressure on the shell. Continue rotating until you reach the other side of the shell, then continue rotating for another 5 seconds and then stop.
-
Blow on the hole created to remove processing residues. Now evaluate the size of the hole created. If necessary, rotate the sharp part of your tool inside the hole again until it reaches the desired size.
-
When finished, wash the shell with clean running water. Clean the tools used and tidy up the workstation.Advertising
