Blankets serve to protect newborns from the cold, providing them with warmth and comfort, but they often also become an irreplaceable memory of their childhood. Most baby blankets feature a super soft outer layer and an inner lining that acts as insulation. They are sometimes made of fleece and cotton.Follow these templates to create a personalized blanket for your little love.
-
Start with two 90cm long strips of fleece. You can choose them in any color and pattern.
- Fleece-only blankets are easy to make because it is an inexpensive material that requires no sewing. You can buy patterned or monochrome footage.
- For example, you could choose your child's favorite color or a motif with animals, flowers or the symbol of their favorite team.
- Combine colors and patterns by using a single color on one side and a pattern on the other. In this case you will need two pieces of fabric of the same size.
-
Place the first piece of fleece wrong side up and place the other piece on top. In other words, the two reverses must match.
-
Slide a mat under the fleece to trim the edges using scissors or a rotary cutter. Follow the pattern lines carefully for a straight cut.You don't need to trim all the edges;you can do this if they are regular or to create a shaped edge with decorative scissors.
-
Pin a 10 x 10cm square to each corner of the fleece. Cut out the squares to remove the fleece piece.
-
Take the tape measure and lay it out on the fleece from the tip of the right corner to the left, so that there is a 10cm wide strip underneath the tape measure. It is best to secure it with pins to ensure it does not move.
-
Holding the tape measure still, use scissors or a cutter to create a fringe. Cut strips of fleece 10cm high and 2.5cm wide.Only cut below one metre.
-
Repeat the same operation on the other three sides, making sure to keep the tape measure still. You should get a fringe all along the edge of the blanket, with stripes 2.5cm wide and 10cm high.
-
Separate the top from the bottom, then tie the fringes together in a double knot. Repeat the operation on the entire fringe.
-
Check again to make sure you have tied all the fringes. Now you're done!Advertising
-
Choose the size. You can use larger or smaller needles for this project. However, make sure you use a single basic thread for thin needles and a maximum of three for thicker ones.
-
Mount the desired number of stitches. Wrap the yarn into a loop around your index finger and pass it around the needle.
-
Take the thread and pull both ends tight until you have created an adjustable knot that will allow you to change the size of the ring. Place it on the iron and pull.
-
Use this method to join the stitches, creating a loop with your index finger and passing it through the needle. You will get a single stitch that will allow you to tighten the yarn around the needle.
- If you use 2, 3 or 4 needles, cast about 150 stitches for a medium sized blanket. If you use the 5, 6, 7 or 8 then you will need between 70 and 80 points. For even larger needles the number of stitches drops to between 60 and 70.
-
Once the stitches are assembled, work on rice point the blanket in the size you want.
-
Close the work by inserting the left needle into the first stitch and passing it over the second.
-
Work one more stitch, slip the left needle into the first stitch on the right needle.
-
Finally, pass the right stitch over the left stitch.
-
Continue closing each stitch and cut the remaining yarn leaving about 15 cm of thread. Use a needle to pull the remaining thread through the last stitch.Advertising
-
Start with around 300g of worsted weight yarn and a 5mm crochet hook. It is advisable to purchase a yarn specifically for baby skin, although in theory any type of yarn would be fine.
-
Make a chain of 132 stitches. Slide the hook through the loop of a knot, wrap the yarn around it in a back-to-front motion, and create a new loop through the loop of the knot.
-
Double crochet the fourth chain from the hook. Wrap the thread around the hook, thread it through the fourth stitch, wrap the thread again around the hook and bring it through the stitch.Pass the thread over the hook again, bringing it through the previous two loops. To complete the double crochet, wrap the thread a third time and pass it around the last two loops.
-
Double crochet over the 132 chains to create a stitch on each.
-
At the end of the row, turn the blanket so that the last stitch is now the first to be worked and chain three.
-
Make another stitch in each double crochet of the previous round and turn the work again with three chains. This will be your pattern for the rest of the quilt.
-
Continue until you reach the end of the ball.
-
Cut what's left over, leaving about 15cm and threading this tail through the last loop created with the stitch. Incorporate it into your work before cutting off any ends.
-
The more experienced can create variations using multiple colors. To incorporate them, just finish the round and wrap the new color around the hook. Then you have to pull it through the two remaining stitches on the hook and continue working with the new color.
- The blanket will be approximately 80 x 90 cm, depending on the softness of the work.

-
Cut 110 x 110cm squares from fabric of your choice. Cotton is usually the most used.
-
Place the fabric squares on a layer of quilt batting, then arrange everything on a piece of flannel. The padding and flannel will be a few cm larger than the cover.
- Use safety pins to hold the fabrics together.
-
Attach a piece of tape diagonally from corner to corner.
-
Use the edge of the ribbon as a guide when sewing the quilt with your sewing machine.
-
Remove the tape and move slightly to the sides of the row you just sewed, pressing into the quilt diagonally. Follow the tape with your machine foot to create a second diagonal seam.
-
Repeat this step moving from the center to the corners on both sides of the original seam.
-
Move the tape and repeat the 4th, 5th and 6th steps. You will thus create various shapes where these diagonal points meet those created in the opposite direction.
-
Trim the edges of the quilt that you don't need after you've sewn it all together.
-
Cut a strip of fabric about 8cm long to use as a hem. You can choose it in a single color to combine the patterns used in this example.
-
Sew the strips together on the short side to make a single 4.6m long piece of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise.
-
Pin it to the bottom edges of the quilt on the flannel side. Check that all four sides of the quilt are included.
-
Sew the edge at the bottom. Allow about an inch for the seam.
-
Turn the quilt over and fold the edge towards the front. You can use any stitch for this step.Advertising
