If you are a pipe smoker, you will have found yourself with dry tobacco at one time or another. It may happen that you buy it in a shop where it has not been stored well sealed or where it has been exposed for too long. Some smokers, in truth, appreciate "crunchier" tobacco, but in this tutorial you will find some tips for rehydrating it and creating clouds of smoke again.

Rehydrate Tobacco with Heat

  1. Get a model that has a basket on top where tea leaves typically sit.Add boiling water, taking care that it does not touch the base of the basket, otherwise you would ruin the tobacco.Place the latter in the basket, cover the teapot and let everything rest for 30 minutes.
    • Check the tobacco to make sure it is moist enough. If not, leave it in the teapot for a little longer.[1]
  2. Preheat the appliance to the maximum temperature.Lay newspaper on a heat-resistant surface and sprinkle tobacco on it.Use a spray bottle to moisten the tobacco with water a few times.
    • Hold the iron over the tobacco, keeping it a few centimeters away, and let it steam for 10 seconds.
    • Be very careful not to touch the tobacco with the appliance.
  3. Place the tobacco inside a clean stainless steel bowl.Moisten it using a spray bottle by misting it 3-4 times.Next, mix the tobacco with a spoon or spatula, then transfer it to a large airtight jar with a rubber seal and screw cap.
    • Heat the jar in the oven at about 250°F (100°C) for 20 minutes or until very hot to the touch. Finally, let it rest for 10 minutes.
    • Remove the container from the oven and wait for it to cool overnight, in a cool, dry place.Don't open it until the next morning.
    • Remember to compact the tobacco well and seal the jar hermetically.[2]

  1. Place the tobacco in a plastic bag or airtight jar.Add a quarter of an orange peel and seal the container.Let everything rest overnight.[3]
    • The next morning, the peel will have hydrated the tobacco which will be quite moist at this point.
  2. Place the tobacco in a plastic bag and also add a piece of raw potato.Check the contents every couple of hours, as this method allows for very rapid rehydration.[4]
  3. Place all tobacco in an airtight plastic bag.Add a whole roll (or half, if you don't have much tobacco) and seal the bag.Check the contents every few hours until the tobacco has reached the right level of hydration.
    • If you wait overnight, the tobacco will become very moist.

Moisten the Tobacco with Wet Products

  1. Sprinkle about half the tobacco evenly on a paper towel.Moisten it slightly with a spray bottle filled with water.Move the mixture with your fingers to fluff it.Repeat the process until the tobacco is slightly wet.Transfer it to a sealable plastic bag in which you had already placed the other half of still dry tobacco.
    • Shake the bag to mix the contents evenly.
    • Wait about half an hour to allow the moisture to spread.
  2. Transfer it to a bowl (better if very large, to ensure a greater contact surface with the air) and cover the latter with a clean cloth, which is damp but not too wet.The fabric should not touch the tobacco, so you can secure it with a rubber band along the edge of the container.
    • Check your tobacco every few hours.
    • With this method, you will reduce the chances of compromising the integrity of the product.
  3. Get a new, unused foam sponge, then cut off a corner.Moisten this portion of sponge with water and then wring it out so that it does not drip.Place the piece of damp sponge in an airtight container with the tobacco to act as a humidifier.

Advice

  • If you decide to rehydrate the tobacco overnight, then you should set aside a small amount of dry product to add in case the mixture becomes too moist.
  • Rehydration is a process that leads to better results when done slowly.Tobacco should not stay wet for long, otherwise it may rot or mold.
