You will need to carefully consider the fabric you wish to embroider. It can be a complicated decision. If you're a beginner, try starting with a scrap of cotton or white canvas. As you learn and experiment with different fabrics, you'll need to keep a few things in mind, such as:
    • Choose a fabric that goes well with the item you will be embroidering on.
    • Choose a solid fabric with a fairly dense weave (at least 11 threads per centimeter), especially if the design will contain heavy elements, such as ribbons or buttons.

First, for serious projects, make sure you get embroidery thread and not "craft threads" or similar products. The latter are less suitable for embroidery because the quality is much lower and the color can bleed, although they are useful and cheaper for small pilot projects and for starting out practice.
    • It is advisable to adjust the weight of the thread (i.e. the number of threads it is made up of) based on how detailed the embroidery is.The more detailed it is, the thinner the thread should be.The wider the pattern, the more double it needs to be.
    • Don't worry too much about which thread to buy. There are many types, but generally the thinner ones affect the final appearance (once finished, the pattern can be shinier or madder).Beginners don't have to worry about this aspect.
    • Be careful not to buy machine embroidery threads, since they are intended for use with embroidery machines.

Sarah Slovensky, of Hoffelt & Hooper, offers this tip:“Embroidery thread is created by threads coiled together in a skein;the skeins can be divided into smaller groups of threads. The ideal is to use fewer threads in projects with a lot of details and full skeins for weaving or less detailed work."

For simpler initial projects, it's best to get a basic embroidery needle.A needle no.12 or 18 is great for starting to embroider on canvas. Some needles are pointed, while others have rounded tips, but if you're a beginner, the sharp tip will allow you to complete most simple projects.

Sarah Slovensky, of Hoffelt & Hooper, suggests:“Always use sharp needles. A size 5 needle is fine to start with. The size of the needle should be large enough to make it easy to pass through the fabric, but not so large that it leaves large holes in the weft."

  4. You will need an embroidery hoop that is the right size for your project. You will also need a medium to transfer the pattern onto the fabric (we'll discuss this in the following section). There are also other useful accessories, such as thimbles and needle threaders that can make your job easier (and avoid injuries!).

Trace the Pattern

  1. If you're a beginner, it would be best to stick to something simple.Choose a pattern with clean lines, that doesn't have too many areas to fill and with rather large shapes. It will take a while for you to become proficient at embroidering detailed designs, so for now try your hand at simpler projects.
    • Flowers, stars and simple line designs are great patterns for beginners.
    • You can find some designs on the Internet, but you can also draw or trace them yourself.
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
You will need to choose a method to apply the design you found or made to the fabric. For beginners working with simple fabrics, decals are probably easier. You can also use iron-on embroidery stickers, although they usually make the design blurry, so be aware of this.If you're more daring, you can directly embroider a freehand design.
    • You can also try water-soluble fabrics, which allow you to sketch or emboss the design onto a temporary fabric, embroidering directly onto it, while the permanent fabric remains underneath.
    • Stencils are also a good solution during the learning phase, especially because the projects are simple.

Before continuing, you need to know how the drawing is made.Which areas need to be filled? What color are they? What are the parts to embroider in the background and foreground? This is essential for the project to run smoothly. If you don't plan these aspects in advance, it's like getting into the car without having an itinerary, hoping to get to Milan.

Starting Embroidery

  1. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
Embroidery hoops (which we highly recommend using) consist of two wooden rings with a clip that holds them together. The internal ring goes on the wrong side of the fabric, while the external one on the right side where you are going to embroider.Assemble them and then tighten the screw holding the frame together.
    • You will want to make sure the fabric is taut. After all, that's the purpose of the circle!
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
Cut a piece of thread to embroider with. The length will depend on how much you need to embroider, the stitch you need to use, and the thickness of the thread and fabric. In general, you don't want the thread to be more than twice as long as your arm, otherwise it will be difficult to pull, but you can make an exception if the project requires you to use the same thread over a fairly large area.

Sarah Slovensky, of Hoffelt & Hooper, says:“Never cut pieces of wire longer than an arm's length. When you finish it, cut another piece and continue with your work. Longer pieces of thread will form knots."

  3. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
Thread it into your embroidery needle, just like you would thread it into a regular sewing needle. This is why it is important to use an embroidery needle:the eye is much longer and can accommodate more threads. However, unlike sewing, it will not be possible to fold the entire length of the thread in two, if not just a part, leaving a long tail, used for embroidery, and a shorter one of about 7 cm, which will be left over.
  4. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
Before passing the thread through the fabric, it is important to understand where the stitches will go.Generally in embroidery it is advisable to start with the parts of the background to arrive at those in the foreground, as the sections of the design get closer towards the viewer. This process will allow you to overlap dots between some colors, creating depth.
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
Before starting embroidery, you need to create some kind of stop that prevents the thread from moving in the fabric. If you're a beginner, it will probably be easier to tie a knot at the end of the longer tail.Once you get the hang of it, you can move on to using an invisible knot that won't create volume.
  6. Watermark wikiHow to Ricamare a Mano
When you finally start embroidering, you will want to start from a corner or meeting point. This way you will give your creation a more natural and elegant look.Look for areas of contact between the various elements of the design. If the pattern is very simple, such as a circle, simply choose anywhere to start.

Advice

  • Make sure you don't have rough hands when hand embroidering.Exfoliate and apply a moisturizer. You will be able to embroider more easily and the thread will not get caught in your hands if they are smooth and soft.
  • When choosing a pattern, remember that if you don't like the colors recommended in the project legend, you can always customize the work.
