Smoking cigarettes is an unhealthy habit that affects more than a billion people.[1]
If you decide to smoke anyway, you need to find a way to light your cigarettes;fortunately, there are different models of lighters and matches on the market. With the right technique, it is easy to light the cigarette and make it a natural gesture.
-
Put the cigarette in your mouth. Hold the filter at the end of the cigarette between your lips;you can hold it using your index finger and thumb, or you can choose to use your index finger and middle finger.[2]
- Make sure you have the part of the cigarette with the filter in your mouth;you can tell because this end often has a different color and there is cotton inside it.
- If your cigarette has no filter, you can hold either end between your lips.
-
Light the flame. Grab the lighter by placing your thumb over the wheel that creates the spark.Push your thumb down while holding down the gas release button;the other fingers should grip the lighter along its body.[3]
- Some lighters have a button instead of a wheel;in this case, you have to proceed in the same way, except that you have to press the button with your thumb.
- It's easier to turn it on if you use your dominant hand.
-
Bring the flame close to the tip of the cigarette. Keep the button pressed during this phase and let the cigarette be above the flame.
- If you keep the lighter lit for a long time, the metal becomes very hot due to heat transfer.[4]
- Stand behind a wall or protect the flame by cupping a hand around the lighter to prevent it from going out.
-
Inhale while the flame is still in contact with the end of the cigarette. In this way, the air passes through the tobacco of the cigarette, allowing it to be lit;two or three aspirations are sufficient.Once the cigarette is lit, release the lighter button.
- If you exhale through the cigarette, the flame at the tip increases.[5]
-
Take a match from its box. Remove it from the container and hold it with your index finger and thumb.Matches are on sale at the main tobacconists and supermarkets.
- You can buy the ones that light up by rubbing them on any rough surface or the safety ones, which only light up thanks to the sandpaper on the package.[6]
- Some shops and bars give away personalized matches as gadgets.
-
Rub the match on the sandpaper. Holding it firmly with one hand, rub it on the ignition strip located on one side or back of the box.
- The friction that is generated between the sandpaper and the match activates the combustion of the red phosphorus that covers the tip of the stick, transforming it into white phosphorus.[7]
-
Bring the match close to the tip of the cigarette. While the flame is still alive, bring it closer to the cigarette, making sure it surrounds the entire end.Protect it with your other cupped hand to prevent it from going out.
- It's not easy to light a match when it's raining or windy.
-
Inhale through the cigarette. Draw on the side of the filter to start the tobacco burning, but do so quickly, as the flame continues to burn the stick; If the match is almost completely burned out, blow it out and light another.
-
Blow on the flame to extinguish it. Be sure to blow out the match completely after lighting the cigarette;Dropping a lit or glowing match can cause a serious fire. You can also quickly wave your hand to put out the flame.
-
Use a barbecue lighter as an alternative to a regular one. Although these tools are designed for setting fire to charcoal, they are a quick solution for lighting a cigarette when you don't have matches or a traditional lighter;they typically have a long stem and a handle with a button.[8]
- Light the cigarette as you would with any disposable lighter.
-
Turn on the stove to quickly get a flame. If you don't have any matches or lighter at home, turn on the gas stove and hold the cigarette to the flame.Carefully light the burner and, using your hand, place the tip of the cigarette on the flame;when it has caught fire, try to vacuum through the filter.
- Don't put your face close to the stove, otherwise you can get burned.
- If you smell gas and don't see the flame, put the cigarette away, leave the house immediately and call 115 (fire brigade emergency number).[9]
-
Use the glowing tip of another person's cigarette to light your own. If you are in the company of other people and don't have a lighter or match available, you can ask another person to "lend" you their still lit cigarette.Simply let the two ends touch each other as you draw from the filter of your cigarette.
- This is a great opportunity to start a conversation with a stranger.
-
Use a gas-powered Zippo lighter. The procedure is very similar to that required with a normal disposable lighter.Check that it contains enough liquid gas;some models even produce a wind-resistant flame.[10]
- Closing the lid of the Zippo lighter turns off the flame.
