- |
Bic, and most lighter manufacturers, have installed a childproof device on their products since 1990.If you have arthritis or other problems that prevent you from lighting one (and you don't have children at home), ask someone to do the steps described in this article for you.

Steps
-
Grab a lighter so the red lever is facing away from you. Insert a narrow but sturdy object (like a key) into the hole where the flame comes out.
-
Use the edge of the lighter for leverage and push the band up to bend the two metal tabs that hold it in place. Sometimes, the safety band may pop off suddenly, so work calmly and protect your eyes and those of others.
-
With your fingers or the help of a pair of thin pliers, grasp the band and move it a little as you would with a tooth that is about to come loose. If you pull too hard you could loosen the wheel.
-
Use the flat end of your tool to press the metal tabs that secure the band into its slot.Advertising
There is also a simpler and more efficient solution to the problem than the technique described above (although it depends on the brand of lighter you use).
-
Simply take a fork and insert a side prong between the two wheels and force it upwards. (You can also use another thin object such as a small screwdriver or a sturdy paper clip;it all depends on the brand of the lighter. For Bic, a fork is just fine.) This way you force the safety band out of its housing, although, to never forget safety, remember that it could suddenly pop off and could hit you in the eye. (Use safety glasses.)
-
At this point you just need to use thin pliers or your fingers to completely remove the band. This technique saves you from having to rearrange the fins, which could scratch your thumb even after they're flattened. However, if necessary, use a flat, rigid tool, such as a screwdriver. You can also press the flaps against the edge of the table.Advertising
This is perhaps the simplest method of all. Here's how to do it.
-
Open a pocket knife and hold it to the side, under the band and above the wheel.
-
Pry and observe: usually the band comes off cleanly. It may be helpful to point the lighter downwards. This method usually leaves the flaps intact and you won't have to fold them inward if you perform the movement correctly. It might take a couple of tries, but it should make you look like a "cool" guy.Advertising
Advice
- Don't be scared if there are more sparks than usual, this process loosens the flint a little which is the cause of so many sparks, but they are harmless.

Warnings
- Be responsible, lighter fluid is flammable.
- Keep the lighter out of the reach of children.
- Make sure you put the tabs that secure the band back in their original position, otherwise their sharp edges will scratch your fingers.
