Sharpening a drill bit by hand is quite difficult. It is important to sand it at the correct angle and it is practically impossible to do it freehand. To ensure you do a thorough job, you need to use a special grinding wheel; If you don't have this tool, you have to build it yourself!

  1. When you're ready to sharpen it, slide it into the grindstone holder so that it protrudes slightly over the edge.Make sure it is firmly seated in the housing:it should be located exactly in the central groove.[1]
    • Bring the tip closer to the grinding wheel; However, avoid pushing against it until you have started the machine.
  2. When you're ready, start the engine and push the bit towards the grinding wheel;slide the holder back and forth with one hand, while keeping the tip in contact with the abrasive surface with the other.[2]
    • You also need to twist it slightly as you sharpen it;rotate it slowly clockwise.
    • It is important that the edges are as symmetrical as possible;[3] using the sharpening wheel, the process is much simpler than manual work.
  3. If you need to sharpen it a lot, you'll need to dip it in water every minute or so to make sure it stays cool;continue sanding it until all edges are smooth.[4]
  4. Once you sharpen it, it should be much more efficient than before;you can test it on a piece of scrap wood or a metal surface to make sure it is sharp.[5]
    • Remember that if you plan to drill metal, it is best to use a drill press;in fact, to penetrate this material a lot of pressure is needed even with very sharp tips and a manual drill may not be sufficient.[6]

  1. A small board of plywood is perfect for this project, but you can use any wood you have on hand that you no longer need;check that the board is approximately 30 cm long and 10 cm wide.[7]
  2. Typically, drill bits have an ideal angle of 118°, but the holder must meet an angle of 59° to achieve this result.Take the appropriate measurements and draw guidelines before cutting the piece of wood.[8]
    • If your table saw comes with a protractor, set it to 59° and use the blade to create a notch in the wood.
  3. Start the table saw and slide the piece of wood towards the blade, so that it goes all the way through;you can use another piece of wood to guide the first one in a straight line under the saw.[9]
    • Create a "V" cut in the plywood;this represents the housing that holds the bit in place while you sharpen it.
    • Wear safety glasses and keep your hands away from the blade.
  4. After making it, check that it is large enough to contain the tip;if not, widen it slightly.[10]
    • Be careful not to make it too big, otherwise the tip won't stay put.
