Giving the Cigarette Shape

  1. Use thin rice or wheat straw papers, standard or king-size.You can tear the paper to any size you like (a large, square map is best to start with).Buy the papers at an online store, at the tobacconist or at the supermarket.
    • Get papers that burn slowly and evenly, and make sure they contain few chemicals (which can make the smoke taste bad). There are many quality products available in the market, so choose the best brands.
    • If you want to carry maps around with you, get a map holder.Place the papers in a metal case to prevent them from bending or tearing. You can make a paper holder from a used box of mints.
    • Bring extra maps with you.You can use small pieces of paper to repair any tears or cracks that may have formed while rolling the cigarette.
  2. Contact your trusted tobacconist to choose from various types of tobacco.Purchase neutral or flavored tobacco, depending on your personal tastes.
    • To start, buy a branded product that is affordable.
    • Consider the opportunity to roll a clove flavored cigarette.Mix the tobacco with the cloves (the mixture should contain 60-70% tobacco and 30-40% cloves).[1]
    • Some smokers prefer to use pipe tobacco to roll their cigarettes.Nothing stops you from doing so, but keep in mind that pipe tobacco is wetter than cigarette tobacco and is cut differently;it may be too compact to burn well inside a cigarette. If you use pipe tobacco, chop it up and let it dry before putting it in a cigarette.[2]
  3. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
Spread the tobacco evenly on a work surface, then use your fingers or a piece of cardboard to shape it into a cigarette.Choose a smooth, well-lit surface:a mirror, a book or a clean table. If you don't want to place the tobacco directly on the work surface, cover it with a clean, white sheet of paper.
    • It is useful for the color of the surface to contrast with that of the tobacco, in order to better identify the pieces of tobacco.Rolling tobacco on a brown mat, for example, can be problematic.
    • Make sure the tobacco is not too compact.Unpack it slightly, making sure that the filaments of which it is composed do not separate from each other.
  4. Place the index finger of the same hand in the fold of the paper and use the other hand to adjust the paper, accentuating the fold (hold the paper firmly so as not to drop the tobacco).
    • The index finger held on the fold serves to stabilize the paper while the tobacco is added and ensures that the latter does not fall from one of the ends (the one that will be lit when the cigarette is finished).
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
Use your free hand to spread the tobacco along the crease on the paper.Move it from one end of the map to the other, starting with the one you are holding.Transfer the rest of the tobacco from the work surface to the paper. You can add more or less tobacco, depending on whether you want a thicker or thinner cigarette;the thickness of the cigarette will influence the quality of the smoke (and not only):a cigarette with a lot of tobacco will be more difficult to close and a cigarette with more compact tobacco will have a more difficult draw.[3]
    • If necessary, even the tobacco inside the paper to compact it a little.By making the quantity of tobacco uniform, the cigarette burns more easily. If there are any tangles of tobacco, remove them with your fingers.
    • You can let the tobacco overflow at the ends and then remove it later (this way the ends of the cigarette will not remain too thin).

Rolling the Cigarette by Hand

  1. If you want to use the filter, you can insert it before or after rolling the cigarette (in the latter case, leave an empty space when you put the tobacco). The space for the filter must be the same length as the filter. For the filter:
    • Buy a bag of cellulose filters (you can find them online or at the tobacconist). These filters are completely similar to those found inside packaged cigarettes.[4]
    • Remove the filter from a packaged cigarette and reuse it.If you want to practice rolling and have a pack of packaged cigarettes on hand that you don't intend to smoke, gently tear the paper from the packaged cigarette, remove the filter and place it in the cigarette you rolled (or intend to roll).
    • Make the filter yourself.First, get a small piece of sturdy paper by tearing it off a business card (or something similar).Fold part of the strip like an accordion three times and roll the rest of the paper around the fold. The inside of the filter should look like a W.Make sure the filter can be inserted inside the cigarette;you may have to roll it several times to get it the right size.Keep in mind that such a filter will only prevent some of the particulate matter from entering your lungs.[5]
  2. When the cigarette is full of tobacco, it is ready to be rolled.Continue holding the paper with the same hand, then grasp it with the other hand at the opposite end, holding it the same way (between middle finger and thumb).Detach the index from the map (its contribution is no longer necessary);the map should be supported by the thumb and middle fingers of both hands. The tobacco should be evenly distributed throughout the paper, except for the end where the index finger was resting.
  3. Your fingers should form a straight line from one end of the cigarette to the other.Use your thumbs to hold the map just below your middle fingers;the profile of the fingers should suggest the shape of the cigarette.
  4. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
Roll the cigarette by moving it between your thumbs and forefingers;shape it by compressing the tobacco and rolling the paper tightly.During the process, press more and more on the ends of the cigarette.Try to keep your thumbs and middle fingers parallel.
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
After shaping the tobacco, press down with your thumbs to align the edge of the paper with the top of the tobacco.
  6. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
Stick the edge of the paper into the crease between the paper and the tobacco.Apply more pressure with your thumbs and press up with your middle fingers.Complete the first rotation:wrap the paper all around the tobacco, shaping the cigarette without creasing the lower part of the paper.
    • The leading edge of the paper should slide behind the tobacco as soon as you start rolling (it may take several tries to get this right).Move the leading edge of the paper up and down and tuck it behind the tobacco as the opportunity presents itself.
  7. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
Roll the cigarette on itself until only the adhesive edge of the paper is visible.Close the cigarette as you would an envelope;when the glue is moistened, roll the paper until its edges disappear.Apply light pressure to close the cigarette:slide your thumbs along the adhesive edge and gently press on the glue so that it grips;be careful not to bend, tear or crease the paper.

Finishing the Cigarette

In this way, the cigarette will appear tidier and will be more comfortable to smoke.Any remaining tobacco dangling from the ends could end up in your mouth or fall to the floor.
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
To prevent tobacco from leaking out of the cigarette or the cigarette from not being compact enough, some smokers prefer to twist one or both ends of their cigarettes.Twisting the paper from where you smoke prevents the tobacco from entering your mouth (the presence of the filter helps in these situations). If you prefer to twist the ends of your cigarettes, leave some space at the sides of the tobacco before rolling the paper.
  3. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
If you haven't already done so, and you have left enough space at one end of the cigarette, insert the filter and slightly adjust the paper;if there is no room, use a sharp object (tweezers, a hook, the tine of a fork, etc.) to remove excess tobacco.

  5. You can roll a cigarette whenever you feel like smoking, or you can roll a few cigarettes ahead of time just in case. Some smokers believe that by rolling their own cigarettes they smoke less;in fact, smoking one cigarette after another is more difficult if every time you feel like smoking you spend five minutes rolling one.[6]

Using a Rolling Machine

  1. Roll your cigarette with a rolling machine. This device, in addition to saving a lot of time, makes rolling cigarettes easier, especially if you don't have enough dexterity to do it by hand.[7] Purchase a rolling machine from an online store or tobacconist. To use it, follow the next steps.
  2. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
First, open the machine:separates the two rotating cylinders to reveal a cigarette-shaped cavity.Fill the cavity with tobacco, compacting it as much as possible. When the cavity is full, close the cylinders;one of the two should move in two directions, the other should remain in place.Hold the machine so that the moving cylinder is closest to you.
    • At this point, insert the filter (if you want).Place the filter at one end of the compartment.
    • Remember that the more compact the tobacco is, the more difficult it is to draw the cigarette;when using a rolling machine, you must be particularly careful about this aspect.
  3. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
Insert the paper (non-adhesive side) into the gap between the two cylinders. The adhesive side must face the moving cylinder.Make sure the adhesive edge of the paper is parallel to the top of the machine.
  4. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
This way you will get the map into the machine;Just before the top of the paper enters the cavity, stop the rotation and lick the adhesive strip on the paper to close the cigarette.
  5. Watermark wikiHow to Rollare una Sigaretta
After licking the adhesive strip, continue rotating so that you no longer see the map;continue to move the cylinders a little longer to roll the cigarette properly, then separate the cylinders:your cigarette should be there, perfectly rolled and ready to smoke.

Advice

  • Roll the cigarette after inserting the filter:this way, you will be sure that the filter is in the right position.
  • Take a small piece of breadcrumbs, make a ball and place it in the freshly opened tobacco pack. The crumb will keep the humidity inside the package (alternatively you can use a piece of apple which, moreover, gives a particular aroma to the tobacco).
  • Generally, tobacco cut into thin strands is better when hand-rolling (the cigarette is easier to roll and holds its shape better), while tobacco cut into pieces is better when using the machine.
  • There are different brands of rolling papers, try a few to see which one you prefer.
  • To find the freshest tobacco, turn to retailers who trade the most.

Warnings

  • Be careful when smoking:embers could fall from the end of the cigarette and could ruin your clothes.
  • Smoking is harmful to your health;keep this in mind, especially if you smoke often.[8]
