Steps
-
Prepare your little caterer. You can also make one by threading tacks around the hole in a spool of thread.
-
Insert some woolen thread (or other yarn) of about 20 cm in length inside the caterinette from the upper part and make sure that 8 - 10 cm comes out from underneath.
-
Hold the caterpillar in your left hand and the thread coming out of the top in your right.
-
Name each hook (mentally), such as north, south, east, and west. There is no need for the hooks to respect the real directions but you must be careful not to confuse north with east halfway through the work.
-
Wrap the yarn in a circular pattern clockwise around the north hook.
-
Wrap the yarn around the west hook so that it is taut. The taut thread must pass through the inside of the hooks, near the central hole.
-
Continue wrapping the south and east hooks in the same way counterclockwise.
-
Repeat the same steps until you have two turns of yarn on each hook.Advertising
-
Starting from the north hook, take the lowest (first) loop with the needle and pull it over the hook, then drop it inside, leaving only the second loop on the hook.
-
Repeat the steps on each hook, working counterclockwise (i.e. n, o, s, e). Tighten the stitches by gently pulling the thread from the bottom of the caterpillar.
-
Wrap the thread as you did before but only once. Again, you should have 2 turns on each hook.
-
Repeat the entire procedure of passing the bottom loop over the hook.
-
Continue wrapping and dropping the rounds until you see the stitch coming out of the bottom. A four-sided elastic tube should form, tapering at the tip.
-
Work the wire until the tube is the desired length.
-
7Close the points.
-
Take the remaining loop of the north hook and bring it over the west hook.
-
Take the bottom loop of the west hook, pull it up and drop it as you did before.
-
Repeat the steps for the west and south hooks.
-
When there is only one loop left on the east hook, cut the extra thread, pass it through the loop, and remove it from the hook.
-

Advice
- The great thing about knitting is that it's so much easier than knitting!
- Tricotin works well with threads of many colors (like a gradient rainbow).
- You can buy little caterpillars with up to 20 pegs to make very large tubes. But buy it only if you want to work for a long time just to make a 30 cm tube.

Warnings
- Make sure to wrap the wire on the inside of the hooks, not on the outside. It's very important!
