Terracotta pots are quite sturdy until you try to cut or puncture them, which presents a problem if you plan to turn an ordinary terracotta pot into a tajine pot, a lantern for the porch or patio, a " fairy garden", into a frog terrarium or whatever your creativity suggests. For this reason, before you approach your pot with a saw, grinder or drill, read the answers listed below for key questions you may have. This way you can increase your chances of getting excellent results, rather than piles of pottery shards that were once beautiful vases.

Question 1 of 9:
What tool should I use?
-
Use a circular saw (such as a Dremel) to cut small pots. It can't cut through terracotta like butter, but it will get the job done. For best results, use the Dremel bit fitted with a diamond blade (or the similar attachment that comes with the cutting tool you are using).Below are some of the tips you need to keep in mind:[1]
- Wear work gloves, protective glasses and a dust mask.
- Immerse the vase in water for about 20 minutes so that less dust is produced during cutting. However, it will be a job that will create a lot of dust and mess, so it is always best to do it outdoors.
- Clamp the vase in a bench vice to stabilize it during the cutting phase (be careful not to tighten the vice too much otherwise the vase will break).
- Turn on the circular saw, then gently place the rotating blade on the surface of the pot.Apply even, steady pressure, rather than trying to force the blade into the terracotta.Score the surface of the vase (you can also go from side to side), then move the blade slowly along the line of the cut.
- Pour or spray water regularly where you are cutting in the pot to prevent the terracotta from overheating.
- Very carefully, eliminate any sharp edges along the cut by sanding them with 80-grit sandpaper.
-
2To cut large pots, use an angle grinder. The cutting technique to use in this case is almost identical to that of using a circular saw, but the angle grinder is much larger and more powerful.Make sure you wear all the necessary protective gear, soak the vase in water to reduce the amount of dust that will be produced, cut the vase using light, even, consistent pressure, then remove any sharp edges using sandpaper.[2]
- Unlike a circular saw or a Dremel which can also be held with one hand, the angle grinder must be held and controlled with both hands.Clamp the jar in a bench vice, being careful not to tighten it too much, so that you have both hands free to hold the grinder safely.
- A diamond blade will ensure excellent work, but you can also use a cutting wheel for stone and concrete.
- The angle grinder produces a large amount of noise when operating, so it is advisable to also wear protective headphones.
-
3Use a hacksaw with a tungsten carbide blade. This is an effective alternative albeit a little slower. If you have the time and physical stamina to cut the vase by hand, you can opt to use a hacksaw equipped with a tungsten carbide blade.Blades of this type have an action very similar to that of sandpaper, rather than that of a blade with metal teeth.Again, as with power tools, immerse the jar in water, wear all the necessary safety equipment to preserve your physical safety and clamp the jar in a vice for best results.Make the cut using long, regular movements back and forth to use the full length of the blade, applying constant, sufficient pressure to advance along the section of the cut.[3]
- If you need to replace the hacksaw blade, loosen the wing nut near the handle by turning it counterclockwise.Remove the old blade by sliding it off the two clips at the end of the hacksaw, install the new blade and tighten the butterfly nut by turning it clockwise.

Question 5 of 9:
Can I create embossed or engraved decorations?
-
You can create a decorative engraving using a portable hand engraver. Clean the surface of the vase and immerse it in water, then use a stencil (or draw the engraving subject freehand) to transfer the engraving design directly onto the vase.Put on your full safety equipment, work gloves, safety glasses and dust mask, then turn on the engraver.Use a thin tip (about the size of a pencil) to score along the lines of the design to the depth you want.At this point, remove any dust residue using a clean cloth.[7]
- Tools made by Dremel are a great option for this type of work, but not the only one.
- Consider clamping the jar in a bench vise to hold it steady while you work on the incision.
-
2Also use the hand engraver to remove excess terra cotta present in the engraving and bring out the finished design. The only difference compared to before is that you will now have to use the tip of the engraver to remove all the excess terracotta and, if necessary, pierce it completely. At this stage you can use both the tip of the engraver's cutter and the sides to complete the engraving design. The high rotation speed of the engraver tip is perfect for rounding and beveling the edges of the engraving, but you may still need to use sandpaper when you finish the job.[8]
- This is a great way to carve clay pots like you would pumpkins for Halloween.
