After having built the frame, the canvas must be stretched to the right point around it.Below is a proven method for pulling canvas to cover every staple.

Steps
-
Cut the piece of fabric at least 15cm wider than the size of the hoop (taking into account its thickness). This will make it easier to stretch the canvas.
-
Place the frame centrally on top of the cut canvas.
-
Make sure the weave of the fabric is aligned with the edge of the frame.
-
Start from the longest side of the canvas. Fold it around the frame and, using a stapler, insert three staples in correspondence with the center of the side.
-
Rotate the canvas. Alternatively, stand on the opposite side and pull it firmly, fold it around the frame and insert three more staples in correspondence with the first ones.
-
Stand on one of the two remaining sides and pull the fabric tightly, fold it at the edge and insert two more staples in the center.
-
Perform the same procedure for the last side of the canvas.
-
Reposition yourself on the first side and, starting from the center, Pull one piece of fabric at a time and pin it to the hoop.
-
Repeat the same operation on the opposite side.
-
Continue stretching and securing the fabric to the frame keeping the same order you started with. Alternatively you can start closer to the corners and move towards the center.
-
Continues to insert staples up to 10 cm from the corners.
-
Fold the corners in the most appropriate way and fix them. A good method is to fold the corner over on itself twice so that the edge is flush with the frame.
-
Pull the corners tight, this is the final step and it is the most important.
-
Hammer each staple until it is flush with the frame.
-
Turn the canvas over and tap the center with your finger. It should sound like a drum.It should be very tense. If the canvas has creases or isn't stretched tight enough, remove the staples and reseat it.It will sag further once painted.Advertising
Advice
- Spraying water, moisten the inside of the canvas. As it dries, it will shrink and stretch further.
- Tearing excess fabric will be more precise than cutting it.
- Canvas that have not been primed are easier to stretch.
- Apply a quality primer. As it dries, it will further stretch the canvas.
- Insert small wooden shims in the corners to stretch the canvas further.
- Note:Office staplers are not suitable for this type of work. You will need a staple gun.
- Be careful to properly align the fibers of the canvas with the frame, otherwise the sides of the frame may bend and the corners may slope upward.
- There are special pliers (with a larger surface area to avoid tearing the canvas). They are available in art stores.
