ROME – The lava has started to flow down again Fire Sciara to Stromboli and approaches the coast. The resumption of the effusive activity of the Stromboli volcano is communicated by the Etna Observatory of'Engv, which monitors the activity of the Aeolian volcano.
In the morning the cameras of the INGV surveillance network and the institute's staff in the field had in fact recorded it stop of the lava flow on the Sciara del Fuoco, but now the flow front has started moving again and it is about two hundred meters from the coastline. The Ingv also observes the detachment of blocks from the lava front that end up in the sea.
“The average amplitude of the seismic signal continues to show a stability of values that are at a low level with peaks on the average values – explains the Ingv – The analysis of the seismograms continues to highlight a low level of activity, no evidence of 'explosion quake' and continuous episodes of rolling rocks. No updates or significant changes regarding the analysis of the ground deformation monitoring networks".
STRENGTHENED PROVISIONS ON THE ISLAND.FOR THE COMMISSION MAJOR RISKS “EXCEPTIONAL PHENOMENA“
Meanwhile, a new one took place this morning operational meeting on measures to safeguard the population on the island of Stromboli, for which the alert level due to volcanic activity was raised in recent days.Among the measures implemented by National Civil Protection Service to protect the population, the presence of personnel from the Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, State Police and Fire Brigade has been intensified on the island, in support of the Mayor and local civil protection.
PRE-ALARM PHASE, SOON ORDER AGAINST “TSUNAMI” RISK“
Yesterday the Major Risks Commission, convened by the Head of the National Civil Protection Department, confirmed theexceptional nature of the phenomena observed on Stromboli in recent days, which led to the issuing of a red alert and the activation of an operational pre-alarm phase, and recommended that, despite the apparent attenuation of the phenomena in the last few hours, monitoring must be maintained, both as regards a possible evolution of volcanic activity, and as regards the possibility that the volcanic material falling into the sea could cause a tsunami, as already happened in December 2002.In this regard, based on the recommendations of the Commission, the Mayor is taking steps through an ordinance to ban access to the beaches closest to the Sciara del Fuoco or in any case more difficult to evacuate in case of tsunami warning.
