For the first time ever a commercial aircraft has flew over the Atlantic Ocean without using fossil fuels.The aircraft is from the British company Virgin Atlantic, left London on Tuesday and arrived in New York powered only by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) obtained from waste fats mixed with synthetic aromatic kerosene of plant origin.The flight would thus have emitted 70% less carbon than traditional oil-based travel.This is “a milestone” according to some experts, who added that “sustainable fuels could reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry in the future”.Some climate activists, however, have a completely different opinion, having underlined the limits of technology and reported that the record occurred just two days before the start of COP28, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
