Broiler chickens are a type of poultry raised exclusively for meat production.Despite investigations, the EU has not yet stopped the farms.

The investigations of the Animal Equality investigative team speak clearly:fast-growing chickens exploited for their meat are animals that suffer from serious health problems related to their rapid growth, such as bone deformities, heart and respiratory diseases, which often lead to an early death. In other words, due to genetic selection that they have suffered, it is impossible to guarantee these beings a dignified life without suffering or pain.

These chickens represent over ninety percent of chickens raised for meat in Italy and the vast majority in Europe.Yet the European Food Safety Authority he acknowledged that the genetic selection carried out on fast-growing chickens has disastrous repercussions on their lives, condemning them to be slaughtered within just forty days.In those few weeks, the chickens are not even able to stand up due to their overweight.

In light of this cruelty, how Animal Equality we presented a complaint against the 27 countries of the European Union who raise these animals. We explained before the European Commission how this is in conflict with the EU directive which asks member countries to guarantee animal welfare standards and prevent any form of unnecessary pain and suffering.

The Commission recognized that thefarm of these animals is problematic. Then, in February, it decided to keep the investigation open by asking Member States to provide information on the compliance with European laws on animal welfare on fast-growing chickens raised in their establishments.

It's about an important decision because it shows that the issue, which is thorny for the interests of farmers, according to the Commission deserves to be discussed at European level and that the life of chickens also matters for Brussels.

At Animal Equality, we believe that no animal should be forced into a life of disease or suffering to meet human needs and the profit of the food industry.Fast-growing chickens have been selected for produce more to the detriment of their health. But the price these animals are paying is too high.

Consumer awareness it is therefore essential to stop the extreme exploitation of animals.Choose to do not consume meat and other products of animal origin thus becomes a political act that allows each of us to do your part to send a clear message to the institutions:Raising fast-growing chickens is cruel and unacceptable, and must be stopped.
