The crew of the sailing ship Jean Gab, of the Oceanomare Delphis Onlus association, filmed the group of dolphins

A group of over 200 dolphins was spotted last July 15th off the coast of Ischia, towards the island of Ventotene. The extraordinary naturalistic sighting was filmed by the crew of the Jean Gab, the sailing ship of the Oceanomare Delphis Onlus association. The encounter with marine mammals, of the Stenella coeruleolaba species (commonly known as Stenella striata), took place during the monitoring mission of the marine protected areas of Ischia and Ventotene that Jean Gab carries out daily:almost halfway between the two islands, the large group of dolphins first approached the sailing ship from the stern and then reached and passed it with a gait called "porpoising", a particular way of swimming that allows the dolphins to reduce resistance of the water by jumping over the surface and increasing speed. In the Mediterranean, a population of around 750 thousand specimens is estimated.
