US President Joe Biden has declared that he is giving up the presidential race, and gives his full support to Kamala Harris as a candidate.

“Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my life. And while it was my intention to try to get re-elected, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country that I give up and focus entirely on carrying out my duties as president until the end of my mandate."

Joe Biden withdraws from the presidential race

The US president made this known Joe Biden who decided to take a step back in presidential race, and give up his candidacy for a possible second term as president in the White House. The announcement comes less than four months before the vote (the elections will be held on November 5) and after a few weeks in which his health was questioned, even within his party.

Support for Kamala Harris

Immediately after sharing the note of his decision on his social channels, Joe Biden also immediately added that his support goes to Kamala Harris.“My first decision as the party's nominee in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it was the best decision I ever made.Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement to Kamala to be our party's nominee this year.Democrats, it's time to unite and defeat Trump.Let's do it."

Kamala Harris released a statement after Biden's support.“I am honored to have the support of the President, and my intention is to obtain and win this nomination. For the past few years I have traveled the country talking to Americans about the clear choice they must make in this very important election. And that's what I will continue to do in the coming days and weeks.I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and our nation – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme agenda. We have 107 days until the election. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win“.

What will happen now

After Joe Biden's withdrawal as a candidate, we still don't know what exactly will happen.Biden has given his support to Harris, but the Democratic Party will have - in less than a month - to decide who will actually be the Democratic candidate for the presidential elections.

There were many who appreciated Biden's choice, both within the Democratic Party and beyond, describing his decision as an altruistic gesture, and that he managed to put the state before his personal interests. For example, Bernie Sanders, who has always been progressive and a competitor of the Democrats in the presidential elections, wrote words of praise towards the incumbent president, defining him as the closest to the working class in modern American history. He did not do the same, Donald Trump, the Republican candidate declared that Biden was never fit to run for president, let alone serve the country.”
