ROME – Animal rights activists call it 'bear killing law', a provincial law which among the various measures confirms the possibility for the president of the Province of Trento (currently Massimiliano Fugatti) to arrange for the culling of individual problematic specimens. The text was approved by the provincial council last March and today the Council of Ministers decided not to challenge the Trentino law on bears.
“The law, born from an agreement between the Trentino level and the national executive, in fact represents a important change of pace orfurthermore, a result that looks at the specificity of the territory - says a press release from the Province - has the objective of encouraging the management of large carnivores, allowing Trentino institutions to take all the necessary steps to protect public safety and the activities of the mountain economy".
“We learn with dismay that the Council of Ministers has decided not to challenge the 'bear killing' legislation, provincial law no. 2 of 7 March 2024 of the Pat, which allows the indiscriminate slaughter of 8 animals a year, four of which are puppies, and which constitutes a sensational, yet unacceptable, violation of European and international regulations".Thus the Enpa in a note.
“It's a a very serious fact which confirms the Government's ferocious line towards wild animals, including large carnivores. The ursicidal bill is a provision of unprecedented cruelty which authorizes shooting into the crowd and which represents a serious and concrete threat to the conservation of the species. As a National Animal Protection Agency - continues Enpa - we will mobilize in every location and with all the tools at our disposal. We are already ready to turn to the European Union. And this, obviously, would mean the probable opening of an infringement procedure against Italy for the violation of the Habitats Directive. It is unacceptable that the Government decides not to intervene, leaving our country under the ax of Brussels, with yet another infringement procedure against all Italian citizens".
