ROME – A day of celebration for plant one hundred million trees:happening today in Kenya, where the government promises to maintain its commitments to fight climate change by contributing to reforestation with the addition of 15 billion new foliage. The initiative of these hours was announced only last week, close to the anniversary. The Minister of the Interior, Kithure Kindiki, he had spoken of a "special holiday" in which "citizens are expected to plant trees as a patriotic contribution to efforts to save the country from the devastating effects of climate change".
Kenya's forests cover approximately 7 percent of the national territory. With the aim of expanding this surface area to a tenth of the total, the Nairobi government has set aside the equivalent of 80 million dollars.Kenya has proposed itself as a point of reference at an international level by hosting the Africa Climate Summit in September, a continental initiative.Among the topics debated were the droughts that have intensely affected the Horn of Africa region since 2020, in particular Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.
Reforestation initiatives are nothing new in the area.Last July, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, announced an ad hoc planting day to beat the previous national record of 353 million trees in 12 hours.
