The Kj1 bear attacked a tourist in Trentino on 16 July.After two killing orders revoked by the TAR, she has now been killed.

Who was the Kj1 bear

Bear Kj1 was 22 years old, she was the daughter of two brown bears brought in Trentino starting in 1999 and was currently the mother of three little ones.Last July 16th in the municipality of Dro, in the province of Trento, had become the protagonist of an attack against a French tourist, who was injured.In the past the Kj1 bear had had other close encounters with humans and interactions with the environment that had caused damage, to the point thatIspra she had expressed herself in favor of his demolition.

“Responsible in his life for various damages (68) and some interactions with humans (7), all of which occurred in the summer months”, it is read in the opinion, which cites episodes starting from 2017.Apart from the latest injury of the French tourist, the episodes relating to the Kj1 bear had not had any particular consequences.

The killing of the bear

On July 23, the Kj1 bear was captured and, before releasing her into the wild, she was fitted with a radio collar.After the attack, the president of the autonomous province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti (League), had issued two abatement orders of the bear.In both cases, animal rights associations and the Tar had suspended the measure, leading President Fugatti to revoke them.The July 29th however, a new killing order was signed, after his identification via the radio collar.

On the morning of July 30, while the animal rights associations were appealing against the new culling ordinance, a team from the Forestry Corps intervened in the area of Padaro di Arco and killed the bear Kj1.The announcement came through a note from the Province of Trento, which underlined, among other things, how it was “a dangerous specimen”.Animal rights associations they promised who will battle President Fugatti.

The government's distancing

“I have already said this to President Fugatti:the suppression of individual bears it is not the solution to the problem. I understand the state of mind of the administrators and the population but today we are experiencing the effects of a mistake from the past, due to an ill-advised choice of tourist exploitation of the image of the bear in Trentino, completed 25 years ago.There is certainly one way to go sterilization and we are working on it together in Ispra.But this measure, if not accompanied by correct information to citizens and new actions agreed with the administrations, will risk being insufficient.Certainly as Minister of the Environment I strongly reiterate that suppression cannot represent the first and only solution to be implemented".
