A defeat. Joe Biden it didn't just go bad over the course of the debate between candidates from last night. It went terribly.
And his failure was all the worse, the simpler the task he had to carry out:he had to speak, he had to silence the doubts about his age and his lucidity. And he didn't succeed.
Or rather, yes.He succeeded because no one can objectively say that he was not "lucid and oriented" in his presentation of data, numbers and facts.
How Joe Biden did
But that's not the point.Partly because the fact that someone who wants to be president of the United States is "lucid and oriented" is the minimum wage, and partly because this was not what Joe Biden should have done last night.
He shouldn't have limited himself to being lucid and oriented, but he should have shown himself to be effective, insightful, energetic, "on the mark".And instead, not only was it not, but on the contrary, listening to him was torture.
The voice reduced to a rattle, the very slow pace of speaking, the increasingly pronounced uncertainty:things that made it almost impossible to hear what the president was saying, more like an ectoplasm than a commander in chief.
And things, if possible, got worse in the moments when Biden was silent and it wasn't his turn to speak. In those moments of silence, the president's gaze wandered into space, with a confused and dazed expression.
The objective of this debate (which, among other things, was proposed and requested by the Democrats) was only to put to rest the doubts about Biden's age and show that Donald Trump he was out of his mind. And this objective was not only not achieved, but if possible it was overturned.
Because Biden's presentation was so bad that even he made a fool of himself Trump, that is, the most unlikely and lying character in today's politics.
How Donald Trump fared
Trump, in fact, he lied for an hour, invented things, made random hyperbole about the fact that his was the best presidency of all time, and yet, despite this he was more effective in his presentation, oratory, tone and even volume of voice.
Biden, however, does not.Biden, no.Biden was torture.
Of course, Trump was lying and Biden wasn't.Trump is a full-blown criminal and Biden is not.But this is not what we are talking about today, and what we will talk about in the coming months. And this isn't even what will be decided in the elections.
On the contrary, what will decide the elections will be whether people think, or not, that Biden is or is not fit enough to lead the country for another four years.Which takes this election to the next level.
Because Biden (or rather, the Democratic Party) may have managed, without wanting to, to legitimize Trump who, this evening, for the first time in his life, despite the cloud of lies and inventions that he was spouting at random, seemed to be the candidate less unlikely of the two.
