- On the occasion of World Dog in the Office Day, here are the most important rules for peaceful coexistence.
- So that our four-legged friend is happy and the environment around him can be dog-friendly.
Today we celebrate World dog day in the office and the anniversary, obviously, makes all the life companions of a four-legged friend happy who cannot, or do not want, give up his company even in the workplace. But what are the basic coordinates to ensure that the presence of a dog is it compatible with that of other human hosts? And what is your advice so that the animal respects the procedures and the necessary adaptation to the rules in force in the office? Mylav has highlighted, with the help of its veterinary experts, the suggestions for a peaceful sharing of working hours between humans and dogs. And we'll tell you about them.
A normal day with our dog in the office
World Office Dog Day is an observance established in the United States with the name of Take your dog to work day at the end of the nineties, when the so-called smart working it was still an unthinkable phenomenon and far from common logic. Many people now work from home, but in general the working world has become much more dynamic and open, to the point of conceiving the idea of welcoming four-legged friends within the walls of an office. There has been much talk about the benefits of this habit. What are the main ones?
Experts explain, in this regard, that employees' mood improves because they stay in a pleasant environment with greater interaction between colleagues;there is a loyalty to the company that becomes a friend and a serene atmosphere is established, even if with a few... extra hairs. If you want to bring your dog to the office, however, you must respect it some rules to prevent the animal from suffering and then our work is also affected, to ensure that the environment is pleasant for him and for those around him and that the right methods are always followed for the complete well-being of both species involved.
Pay attention to the well-being of our four-legged friends
A dog in the office can be important in fostering warmer and more positive relationships between the people who work there.“It is capable of bringing joy, a bit of informality – which never hurts – and, above all, a lot fun. However, if we decide to take him with us to work, even if it is only a few times a year, it is essential to respect some basic instructions to prevent the animal from feeling ill and not experiencing the 'move' peacefully.
With everything dogs do for us, what does it cost us to put ourselves in their shoes and try to understand what is good for them, regardless of what is comfortable for us?This is also why we must never forget to follow simple rules”, explains the Dr. Maria Chiara Catalani, veterinary behaviorist and Mylav expert.
The six rules to respect for a top coexistence
- Reserve a dedicated corner for him, even if our office is not very large. When we bring a dog to the office we must think about also bringing its kennel with us, or in any case a cloth that it knows and whose smell it can recognize. It is better, then, if its little corner is prepared in full view of the owner, with a bowl of water and some kibble, in a quiet and non-transit place. If our four-legged friend is used to having some stuffed animal or toy, it is always better to take him with us, so as to recreate the same environment he has at home in the office.
- It is important to pay attention if there are multiple dogs sharing the same environment. It will be a good idea to let them get to know each other first, perhaps with a walk together and check that none of them are uncomfortable, tense or excited by the presence of the others.Furthermore, if you were to offer a snack, it would be best to avoid too much proximity between the various subjects:all this could cause some growling or tension due to a natural possessiveness towards something that is not eaten every day.
- If our dog is particularly lively we bring some natural chews or mental activation toys. If we have a puppy, or in any case a particularly active dog, we can also think about bringing with us some natural chewables, such as deer antler (it must be removed when it has been gnawed and they consume too much so as not to risk them ingesting it in a single piece that is too large), coffee or olive wood, heather root, or meat snacks (pig ears and noses, beef, chicken feet) or fish (to be calculated in the daily caloric amount of the daily ration) .This will help him to release any nervousness through chewing and to relax.
- There are also mental activation games (with various levels and difficulties), useful for keeping the dog busy for a while, without exaggerating and only in our presence. We must always remember that the dog tires more when he is mentally stimulated (compared to physical stimuli), so a half-hour mental activity will tire him more than a walk in the park (which in any case should never be missed).
- Even if our puppy is cute and sociable, you shouldn't let him be "pushed" by all your colleagues if he doesn't want it. There are dogs who love to be caressed and cuddled and others who are more shy and wary.Every owner knows the character of their friend and behaves accordingly, but often people on the street see a furry ball and can't resist the urge to caress and cuddle it.This can obviously also happen in the office and is often done in good faith. However, we must explain to colleagues that our dog may not like to be handled and that if we approach him we must do so with some care (do not touch his head, but in places that are pleasant for him, such as for example under the chin or on the chest), respecting his hours of rest.
- Let's set aside some time for him to take a walk.Even if we are busy in meetings we must never give up the daily walk. Our agenda will be precious:as we note deadlines, commitments or other things, we foresee an alarm so as not to get distracted and plan for going out with our four-legged friend:It will be good for him and for us too to take a break and do some healthy exercise. It is always important to respect the usual exit times to keep your habits unchanged and your lifestyle unchanged even if you are in the office and not at home.
- If we see that the dog is not comfortable in the office, let's not bring it anymore. It's true that if we don't have a dog sitter or if there's an emergency and we don't know what to do, we have to bring our friend to the office. However, if we notice that he is not feeling well, shows agitation, cannot find his place, does not eat, does not drink, etc... we must think about not taking him with us anymore because he is evidently not at ease.We therefore act in advance, if we know that our work could potentially require us, even at the last moment, to go to the office in person and we contact a dog sitter in advance or contact the dog nurseries, now present in various cities, or alternatively , nearby guesthouses. This could be useful for us to avoid leaving the dog at home alone if we know we will be away for many hours.
All in all, then, bringing your dog to the office can really translate into a happy experience for us, for him and for those around us.Just know the basic rules and don't forget that our four-legged friends are not human beings and have their own world and their own ways to refer to.Always.
