VENICE – Hours of apprehension in Fossalta di Piave, in the Venetian area, where an operator fell into the water while closing a pontoon bridge and was lost in the Piave river. “I join in the apprehension of the family members of the man who fell into the water at the Fossalta pontoon bridge”, declares the president of Veneto, Luca Zaia, in a note in which he takes stock of the wave of bad weather that has hit since yesterday the region.

FLOODING-LANDSLIDES IN VENETO:DAMAGE MAP, VICENTINA PEDEMONT RANGE AND VALBELLUNA AFFECTED

Among the effects caused by the bad weather in Veneto yesterday, in the late afternoon localized flooding was reported in some municipalities in the foothills of Vicenza and in Valbelluna, as well as modest wind damage in the central-eastern plain. In the evening a critical issue emerged in the Municipality of Setteville:the Tegorzo torrent in the Schievenin valley has eroded the road resulting in the isolation of two families;as a result, serious damage to the aqueduct of the Grappa Mountain Community was reported. This morning in some areas of the Municipality of Setteville the supply of drinking water, after having been interrupted, is now available in low pressure. In the hamlet of Quero, two tankers have been positioned to guarantee the supply of water.Landslides have been reported in the Municipality of Monte di Malo resulting in the temporary partial isolation of three families.
During the night RFI reported the closure of the railway bridge over the Retrone river, resulting in the diversion of two passenger trains. Traffic was restored from 5am.As per the operating procedure, nine activations were communicated for the pre-alert-alert phases for dam risk-downstream hydraulic risk relating to the main reservoirs.

ZAIA:LAMINATION BASINS STILL FUNDAMENTAL, BUT IT IS CONFIRMED THAT ANIMAL BURNERS WEAKEN DAMBS

“The wave of bad weather that hit the Veneto yesterday is running out and we can say that this time too the lamination basins were the strong element of our prevention system. At 5pm yesterday the Muson dei Sassi basins were opened, whose overflow level was lowered in advance to save Castelfranco, and Montebello.Shortly before 6pm, the Orolo and Caldogno basins were opened in succession. Here I want to point out that the Civil Engineers of Verona detected the presence of 170 dens of fossorial animals, badgers and foxes, only in the Veronese stretch of the Guà downstream from Montebello. This is an example of a critical situation caused by banks perforated by burrows which put their safety at risk", says Zaia, commenting on the effects of the disturbance which yesterday afternoon brought heavy rain to some areas of the Veneto foothills, causing various inconveniences. At the moment the flood levels of the main rivers are passing, but the hydrometric levels do not cause concern.
“In the meantime they tell us that from tomorrow the Veneto should be affected by another disturbance.I remember that we have increasingly sophisticated forecasting models and tools at our disposal that help us, together with the construction of the works, to prevent the worst in the event of adverse weather events. But we must consider that while it is true that data are useful, it is always the men who, based on skills and experience, make the decisions", finally states Zaia.
