Transferring an image onto a glass object, such as a glass, jar, mirror or window, is a way to personalize and decorate your home environment. You can copy any illustration you get with a laser printer or that you find in books or magazines. To do this, attach some tape to the figure you want to transfer, then dip it in water, remove the paper and attach it to the glass object.Alternatively, you can use a photo transfer gel to move the image directly onto the glass surface.

Apply Adhesive Tape to the Image

  1. If the illustration you want to transfer only exists in digital format at the moment, you will need to print it.For best results, use only a laser printer and avoid trying these steps with prints made from an ink model.[1]
    • Alternatively, you can transfer the image from a magazine or newspaper page, or from a photograph developed from film.
    • If you will have your image printed at a local copy shop, make sure the printer they use is non-ink.
  2. Cut a piece of clear tape and apply it directly over the print or magazine page.Make sure the adhesive completely covers the figure you want to transfer.[2]
    • If the image is larger than the width of the tape, you will not be able to transfer it.Reprint it so that it is slightly smaller in size than the sticker, which comes in at about 3 inches wide.
  3. Carefully swipe the side of a credit card along the image covered by the sticker, to eliminate any bubbles that have formed.[3] If there are any air bubbles left between the image and the tape, the figure will have holes when transferred to the glass.
    • If you don't have a credit card, use a similar sized item, such as a driver's license.
  4. Start by trimming excess paper from your printed image (or magazine). At that point, cut out the figure itself. If the paper has curves or tight corners, shape it carefully so that only the image remains.[4]
    • If the image is square or rectangular, cutting it will be quite simple.
    • If you don't have scissors available, you can also use a utility knife.

Wet and Transfer the Image

  1. The liquid will help the figure transfer to the adhesive surface of the tape.Let it soak for 5 or 6 minutes.[5]
    • The water should be warm to the touch, but not boiling. If the liquid is too hot, it could melt or warp both the tape and the image.
  2. Take the image out of the water and spread it out on your work surface. With your index and middle fingers, rub it until it rolls up and comes off the tape.[6]
    • If the paper doesn't come off completely, place it back in hot water for another 2 to 3 minutes.
    • At that point, take the image and go ahead and remove the paper.
  3. Once you remove all the paper, you will be left with a strip of packing tape with the figure transferred onto it.Take a hair dryer and use it to dry the tape completely.Once done, you will notice that one side is adhesive again.[7]
    • If you don't have a hair dryer, lay the tape flat on your work surface.Let it air dry, for about 30 minutes.
  4. Now you are ready for the final stage of the transfer.Place the tape at the desired point on the glass, then lower it until it rests on the surface of the object. Then, push it hard using your fingers.[8]
    • Start at the top or bottom and work your way to the other side, to avoid catching air bubbles under the tape.
    • If you notice any air bubbles after applying the tape, remove them using the edge of a credit card.

Use Mod Podge Instead of Tape

  1. Do this using a brush, so you don't get your fingers dirty.Apply a generous layer of the material you will use to transfer the figure to the desired section of glass.[9]
    • You can buy this gel in all DIY stores.Usually, you will find it under the name "photo transfer gel" or "mod podge".
  2. Carefully place the image over the part of the glass you want to transfer it to.Place it on the object and push it onto the surface with your fingers.[10]
    • Once the image is crushed, avoid letting it slide along the glass surface.
  3. If you notice bubbles between the paper and the glass, the figure will not transfer perfectly.Gently slide a putty knife over the surface to remove the air.[11]
    • You can purchase a spatula suitable for this purpose at local hardware stores.
  4. The process will not be successful if you remove the paper before the gel has completely dried. If you live in a humid climate, the material may take longer than 24 hours to dry.[12]
    • The specific type of gel you use may have particular drying directions.Follow them, to ensure that the image is transferred correctly.
  5. Wipe the back side of the sheet with a damp sponge. The water will soak the paper, which will detach from the glass.[13]
    • Be sure to wring out the sponge before using it on the paper.Avoid using one completely filled with water.
  6. Now that you've wetted it, you can peel it off the glass.Work on its surface, making small circles with your thumb to separate and loosen the sheet.[14]
    • As the paper peels away, you will be able to see the image that has adhered to the glass. The gel-transferred figure should remain on the new object as you remove all the paper.

Advice

  • If you have transferred the image to a glass or jar, do not wash it in the dishwasher.Clean the inside with soap and water, then wipe the outside using only a cloth.[15]
  • If you transferred the image with gel, remember that it will be reversed. This is especially important if it contains pieces of text.Be sure to write the words "mirror" before printing.[16]
