You probably have been hearing phrases like “climate crisis,” “climate emergency” or “climate justice” more often lately as people try to get across the urgent risks and consequences of climate change. The danger is real, but is using this language actually persuasive? It turns out that Americans are more familiar with – and more concerned about – climate change and global warming than they are about climate crisis, climate emergency or climate justice, according to a recent survey we conducted with a nationally representative sample of 5,137 Americans. Moreover, we found no evidence that the alternative terms increased people’s sense of urgency, willingness to support climate-friendly policies or willingness to act. The familiar terms – climate change and global warming – did at least as well, and sometimes better, than climate crisis and climate emergency in eliciting concern, perceived urgency and willingness...

The weekly round-up on the climate crisis and data on carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. In recent months the main Italian media have dedicated less space to the environmental issue, in the meantime the advertisements of polluting companies have doubled and the climate crisis is described as if it had no culprits, demonstrating the influence exercised by the fossil fuel industry on the world of information. This is what emerges from the new relationship that Greenpeace Italia commissioned from the Pavia Observatory, a research institute specialized in communication analysis. The study examined, in the period between September and December 2022, how the climate crisis was reported by the five most widely circulated national newspapers (Corriere della Sera, Republic, Il Sole 24 Ore, Future, The Press), from the evening news programs of Rai, Mediaset and La7 and from a sample of in-depth television programmes. The research completes the monitoring of media coverage of climate change...

The Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week is the longest-running cable television series in history, filling screens with sharky content every summer since 1988. It causes one of the largest temporary increases in U.S. viewers’ attention to any science or conservation topic. It’s also the largest stage in marine biology, giving scientists who appear on it access to an audience of millions. Being featured by high-profile media outlets can help researchers attract attention and funding that can help super-charge their careers. Unfortunately, Shark Week is also a missed opportunity. As scientists and conservationists have long argued, it is a major source of misinformation and nonsense about sharks, the scientists who study them, and how people can help protect endangered species from extinction. I am a marine biologist who worked with five colleagues in 2022 to scientifically analyze the content of Shark Week episodes. We tracked down copies of 202 episodes, w...
