Here's when you can turn on the radiators and for how many hours a day

ROME – If up until a week ago in Italy we could enjoy an unusual mild climate for the season, for a few hours now winter has forcefully arrived to claim its role.Temperatures are plummeting, therefore, across the entire peninsula and just one question for those sensitive to the cold:“When do the radiators turn on?”.

In Rome, the mayor Gualtieri, has signed the ordinance which postpones the turning on of the heaters for two weeks, until November 15th.

WHAT THE HEATING PLAN INCLUDES:PERIOD AND HOURS OF USE

As reported by the Roma Capitale website, "in continuity with the National Plan, the 2023-2024 heating season provides for a period of between November 15, 2023 and April 7, 2024.Furthermore, the systems can be turned on "for a maximum of 11 hours per day between 5am and 11pm on each day;for the Capitoline Administration Offices for a maximum of 10 hours per day".

WHICH TEMPERATURE TO SET?

According to the ordinance signed by Gualtieri it will be necessary reduce the temperature by 1°C:“17°C +2°C tolerance for buildings used for industrial, artisanal and similar activities e 19°C +2°C of tolerance for all other buildings.Switch-on period and maximum hours they do not apply to healthcare facilities, retirement homes, nursery schools and nurseries, swimming pools and saunas, diplomatic offices not located in condominium buildings.They are also exempted from complying with the usage days references heat pump systems, also integrated with renewable sources“. 

THE DIVISION INTO CLIMATIC RANGES OF ITALY

The periods and hours in which you can turn on the radiators vary depending on your location.In this regard, the Presidential Decreen.412 of 26 August 1993 divided Italy into six climate zones based on the average daily temperature.

Zone A:municipalities with degree days lower than 600;
Zone B: municipalities with degree days between 600 and 900;
Zone C: municipalities with degree days between 901 and 1400;
Zone D: municipalities with degree days between 1401 and 2100;
Zone E: municipalities with degree days between 2101 and 3000;
Zone F: municipalities with degree-days above 3000.

According to the decree, the operation of heating systems is permitted with the following maximum limits relating to the annual operating period of the heating system and the daily duration of activation:

Zone A:6 hours daily from 1 December to 15 March;
Zone B:8 hours daily from 1 December to 31 March;
Zone C:10am daily from November 15th to March 31st;
Zone D:12pm daily from November 1st to April 15th;
Zone E: 2pm daily from 15 October to 15 April;
Zone F:no limitations.
