Herbal cigarettes contain no tobacco or nicotine and are made from spices, herbs, and other botanicals.Since they are not made with tobacco and do not have nicotine, they are not addictive and, if you prepare them at home, you can also have control over the ingredients.You can use many herbs and herbal blends that offer you several possibilities in terms of aroma and flavor.Although these cigarettes are advertised as "natural" or "healthier", it is very important to remember that they are not good for your health or your lungs and that there is no such thing as a "safe" or "healthy" cigarette.

Choose Ingredients and Tools

  1. These cigarettes typically contain a blend of plant material composed of basic, secondary, and flavoring herbs;whenever possible, always choose pesticide-free products.The base herb should make up 50% of the compost and should be full-bodied and smooth such as:[1]
    • Damiana;
    • Mullein, a perfect herb against asthma and respiratory problems;
    • Cranberry leaves;
    • Common cough, an expectorant (helps clear mucus) also known to cause liver damage.[2] [3]
  2. These should make up approximately 33% of the compound.There are several botanical species to choose from and the best thing to do is to experiment with dosages and varieties until you find the "recipe" you like.Consider keeping a journal;this way, when you prepare a new mixture you can note the ingredients, quantities and result.Among the secondary herbs you can consider:[4]
    • Blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea);
    • Skullcap;
    • California poppy, catnip and chamomile;
    • Passionflower;
    • Bearberry;
    • Hop;
    • Thyme;
    • Lobelia (be aware that it can induce vomiting);[5]
    • Marigold, common marshmallow, marjoram and mugwort;
    • Lion's tail and wild lettuce.
  3. These tend to be stronger and more aromatic, therefore representing only 17% of the blend;among the most common ones used in the preparation of herbal cigarettes are:[6]
    • Peppermint and spearmint;
    • Sage and thyme;
    • Lavender;
    • Cloves;
    • Licorice root;
    • Stevia;
    • Rose petals;[7]
    • Jasmine;
    • Ginseng;[8]
    • Tea leaves.
  4. Look for the raw or most natural one possible:every chemical or additive in the paper is burned and inhaled into the lungs.In particular, avoid papers that are bleached or contain ink;in addition to those made of normal paper, you can find those made of flax, rice or hemp fibre.
    • If you have difficulty rolling a cigarette, purchase a device that allows you to shape it and compact the herbs;you can use it in combination with pre-formed tube papers,[9] available in many different varieties, such as those with or without filter and even mentholated.
  5. Not all smokers use it, but there are products that allow you to filter smoke.If you have opted for pre-formed tube papers, you can purchase them with a built-in filter;alternatively, you can buy reusable or disposable filters.

Preparing the Herbs

  1. Instead of buying ready-made ones, you can take or pick fresh herbs and dry them.This is a good habit, because it allows you to have control over the moisture content (smoking herbs should not be so dry that they become "crunchy").[10] Tie them in small bundles using wire ties and hang them upside down for a couple of days until they are very dry, but not completely dry.
    • To speed up the process, arrange the plant material in a single layer on a baking sheet, set the oven to a low temperature, and use it for drying while inspecting the herbs carefully;alternatively, you can use a dryer.
    • When the material is dry, remove any stems, roots or small twigs that could poke holes in the paper.[11]
  2. With approximately 28 g of plant material you can prepare from 24 to 40 cigarettes, depending on the size.To make a large amount of compost, remember that you need to use three parts of the basic herb, two parts of the secondary herb and one part of the aroma.To prepare a 28g batch sufficient for 24-40 cigarettes, mix in a bowl:
    • 14 g of basic herb;
    • 9 g of secondary herb;
    • Approximately 5 g of aromatic herb.[12]
  3. Mix the herbs with your fingers to create a smooth, puffy mixture and try to break up any large lumps.[13] Transfer it to a suitable grinder or clean coffee grinder to turn it into a coarse powder.Stop grinding when the pieces of grass are still quite large, because you don't want to get too fine a powder.
    • If you don't have a grinder or coffee grinder, you can use a pestle and mortar.
  4. If you bought dried herbs from the store, you'll need to rehydrate them a bit so they burn properly.[14] Take your batch of mixture and arrange it on a baking tray, tray or baking paper, trying to form a thin layer.Spray it with a little water to moisten it a little, making sure to use a clean spray bottle and water.[15]
    • To prevent mold from forming, only dampen the amount of weed you plan to smoke immediately.If you've made a large batch of compost, separate and wet only what you're going to smoke and store the rest in an airtight container.
  5. Once it has had a chance to dry and the weed has a dry, but somehow still moist consistency, you can put it in your cigarette.

Rolling Herbal Cigarettes

  1. Lay a single paper on a flat surface and add an even layer of plant material to the center of the paper, using your fingers or a spoon.To prepare a small cigarette, you only need 0.7 g of herbs;if you want to make a larger one, have just over 1 g of material.
    • If you decide to use a roller instead of shaping the cigarette by hand, compact the herbs into the tool's tray.
  2. You can lift the map or leave it on the surface, holding or moving it with your index fingers and thumbs.Gently fold the paper lengthwise by about a third, to spread the herbs in an even line.Roll the short side of the paper over the weed to wrap it and compact the weed to create a solid roll.Finally, tuck the edge of the paper under the plant material and roll up the rest of the paper leaving a small flap at the end.
    • If you have decided to use a special roller, insert an empty tubular paper and fill it with compacted herb to create a cigarette.
    • If you have opted for a disposable filter that is wrapped in paper, leave some free space at one end and "pack" it at the same time as the herbs in the cigarette.
  3. Moisten the flap you left free to make it sticky.Seal the paper and wait a couple of minutes for it to dry.
  4. If you have chosen disposable or reusable ones that do not need to be wrapped in paper, insert one into the end of the cigarette;otherwise, the filter is already in place.

Warnings

  • However, herbal cigarettes contain tar, carbon monoxide and particulate matter.[16] While they may not be addictive and do not contain the same additives and chemicals as tobacco cigarettes, they are still dangerous to your health.
  • The kretek they are particularly dangerous when they burn and increase the risk of respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis.[17]
