90% of Italians feel "forced" to use the car due to inefficient public transport and poor urban planning.

Italian lovers of the car?More than anything they feel forced to use it.In contrast to other European countries, where daily use of private vehicles has been in constant decline for years in favor of other forms of mobility.

In the most congested areas, you spend an hour a day in traffic

For the 90 percent of our compatriots, the private car remains the most used means of transport for daily travel within cities, not only for the home-work journey but also in free time. The data emerges from research carried out on behalf of Uber from Swg, which last February interviewed 3,800 of our compatriots.Despite the growing challenges linked to the reduction of traffic, pollution and congestion in urban centres, on average Italians spend over 45 minutes a day in their car, with peaks of over an hour in the busiest areas.

“The judgment on the quality of mobility in urban areas is extremely severe.Deficiencies in public transport, the habit of always using private cars, indiscipline of motorists, but also poor management and urban planning by administrators are the central reasons that outline this picture", he explains Riccardo Grassi by Swg.

The link between daily car use and the efficiency of public transport

The daily use of the car is closely linked to the provision of public transport. In this regard, the inhabitants of Milan they are those who express the greatest satisfaction with the operation of buses, trams and metro;and it is no coincidence that every week they spend almost 3 hours less in the car than the citizens of Naples.Over 6 out of 10 Italians would like to use their private vehicle less, especially in the capital of Campania and Rome (69 percent). But when you think about the possibilities alternatives to the car, a lot depends on the different situations that require movement:for the home-work journey, 70 percent of those interviewed would prefer to use i public transport or move to feet, while for evening outings one in five Italians would consider a car service with driver.

For the general manager of Uber Italia, Lorenzo Pireddu, "it is clear that the private car remains a means of transport still widely used in our cities and this is in stark contrast with the general principles of sustainability and efficient urban mobility. To address this challenge it is essential to promote reliable, accessible, sustainable and efficient urban transport alternatives."Finally, a series of elements emerged from the survey that could facilitate less use of four-wheel vehicles in our cities. They range from greater efficiency of urban services to the question of economic savings, up to more personal choices such as those of wanting to reduce one's environmental impact and lead a less sedentary lifestyle.
