TO Paris the journey to push towards the transition from powered vehicles begins from diesel engines to less polluting vehicles. The French capital has been leading for years a battle to reduce the use of diesel, with the aim of ultimately preventing access to all the most polluting cars in the metropolis. From the October 1st, the news is that in some petrol stations the sale of fuel is prohibited.
The four diesel-free stations are all from TotalEnergies
The measure, which starts a new process of abandoning diesel, concerns four sales points TotalEnergies, located in Porte d'Auberbvilliers, Porte d'Orleans and on the Quai d'Issy-les-Moulineaux.All in particular points trafficked. Two are located on the peripheral, the road that circles Paris, and which has recently been the subject of a further measure aimed at limit pollution citizen: lowering the maximum speed limit to 50 km/h (for now on a first section).
The news regarding diesels does not mean that owners of diesel cars can no longer fill up in Paris. However, the progressive closure of the pumps in large service stations requires motorists to turn to the small distributors, still present in the city. But they practice much higher prices:the hope is therefore that the set of measures will encourage the transition to more ecological means of transport.
A transition process in Paris' mobility started many years ago
The decision to amend the concession contracts for the four petrol stations in question was taken by the City of Paris, led by socialists and ecologists, last June. But it has been since 2014 that a long transition path in city transport has been started.
“It's been many years since he motorists I am aware of the timetable for reducing and exiting diesel – commented David Belliard, councilor for Mobility -.We are only implementing what has been decided, with the only compass health protection of our fellow citizens."According to the Parisian authorities, in fact, the fine dust emitted by the engines are responsible for death of eight thousand people per year in the capital region alone, Ile-de-France.
Since 2020, the Municipality itself no longer owns diesel vehicles.Other public services, however, have not followed suit. This is the case for example of police forces and gods firefighters, which have large fleets of vehicles, often powered by diesel.Further efforts will therefore be needed to make the total abandonment of these engines effective.
