Electronic cigarettes, also called e-cigs or e-cigarettes, are vaporizers powered by a lithium battery.Although they are built to resemble real cigarettes, they actually use a liquid cartridge and not tobacco to ensure the nicotine supply. The substance found in the cartridge is a mixture of nicotine, propylene glycol, flavors, dyes and other chemicals.Due to their sudden entry onto the market, the relevant legislation is still developing and the cause-effect relationships between the inhaled liquid and health are not yet well defined.[1] Although they are used by smokers as a support to try to quit traditional cigarettes, the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research of the US FDA does not endorse e-cigarettes as an effective and safe method to quit smoking.[2]

Preparing the Electronic Cigarette

  1. If you have never smoked this type of cigarette, you need to start by getting a kit which is also available online. Many people who smoke moderately prefer refillable kits instead of disposable ones;in this way, the electronic cigarette can be used several times and its cost is amortized.[3]
    • A starter kit contains a rechargeable battery, a charger and a liquid nicotine cartridge. The latter is available in many different flavors and concentrations. If you are a smoker who is trying to quit, choose cartridges with a high nicotine content and a pleasant flavor, to reduce your dependence on the substance, gradually decreasing the concentration of nicotine. You can purchase a kit with cartridges of many different flavors to try and find the ones you like best.
    • Most basic kits cost between 35 and 90 euros.Consider purchasing a high-quality one if you plan to smoke every day or at least several times a week.An economical product is also low-end and often offers a rather limited choice of flavours.
  2. Since these devices are powered by lithium batteries, you must be sure to fully charge them before using. Most e-cigarettes are sold with partially or fully charged batteries.Make sure yours is ready by placing it in the charger and waiting for the signal or light to indicate the process is finished.
    • Most e-cigarette batteries are rechargeable and last up to 250-300 uses. When used and recharged regularly, they can also have a longer life.
    • Do not expose them to direct sunlight or heat.Make sure they don't get wet or drop them on a hard surface, as these factors will greatly shorten their lifespan.
    • Try to recharge your batteries before they are completely used up and always store them with a full charge.By storing them at less than 50% charge, you reduce their long-term capacity.
  3. When the battery is fully charged, remove it from the charger.Take the liquid cartridge and screw it into the appropriate slot. The e-cigarette you bought may come with pre-filled cartridges, or you will need to purchase a bottle of liquid and pour it into the cartridges themselves.[4]
    • Pay attention to the level of substance present in the cartridge, so you can notice when it is running out and replace it.If you plan to use your e-cigarette regularly, you will need to have several replacement cartridges on hand to make it easier.

  1. Be aware of the difference between the technique needed to smoke a traditional cigarette and that for an electronic cigarette. If you use tobacco, you may be accustomed to quick, short puffs or smoking many cigarettes in a row. When using an e-cigarette, it's important to learn to draw slowly and deeply until the vapor fills your mouth. You also need to avoid smoking constantly.Take only three to seven puffs at a time and take a break afterwards. This allows the device to cool and your throat to rest.[5]
    • By smoking too much of an e-cigarette in a short time or using it for too long, you can cause irritation, sore throat and make your taste buds numb, a phenomenon called "vaper's tongue".Give your mouth and throat some rest between smoking sessions to avoid these symptoms.
  2. To heat the coil of the electronic cigarette, proceed with a quick inhalation. There shouldn't be any vapor, but this allows you to prepare the device for the first real puff.[6]
  3. When you inhale, maintain a slow, steady pace until the vapor fills your mouth.Don't suck it into your lungs or swallow it until your mouth is full.
  4. Afterwards, you can draw it into your lungs and slowly exhale it through your nose or mouth.[7]
    • Unlike traditional cigarettes, these devices allow you to absorb nicotine through the mucous membranes of your mouth, as well as those of your lungs and nose.
  5. When using regular cigarettes, you typically have to wait eight seconds before feeling the effect of the nicotine. With electronic ones, absorption takes longer to occur through the mucous membranes and it takes up to 30 seconds to realize it.Even if you have to get used to waiting a little longer to get your nicotine dose, after a few uses you will find that this method is easier.[8]
    • Some smokers need the "throat hit" and they may feel that e-cigarettes are not strong enough for their need.Typically, the longer the draw, the more vapor is in your mouth and the more intense the "hit" will be.
    • The flavor of the liquid also plays an important role in the amount of vapor produced. You can switch to a tobacco product if you're looking for a stronger throat hit, or purchase an e-liquid with a higher nicotine concentration, which has an even more distinctive effect.Remember that higher nicotine levels may cause you to smoke more.
