For Minister Urso, what was reached yesterday in plenary is a "turning point towards a concrete vision" of the ecological transition. Now the negotiations with the Commission and the Council

The EU could soften its regulations on the ecological transition of the car fleet. At least on the timing of entry into force of the production bans for manufacturers. In fact, yesterday the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position on the issues of the transition to Euro 7, the category of vehicles with reduced exhaust gas emissions which should become the standard from 2030.The proposal - voted by a majority in plenary with 329 yes, 230 no and 41 abstentions - specifically asks for the time required for alignment with the new standards to be extended by two years for those producing cars and by at least four for those producing heavy vehicles. But at the same time, the introduction of limits for emissions resulting from tire and brake wear is recommended for the first time.As for permitted polluting emissions, Parliament supported the levels proposed by the Commission for cars, and asked to adopt more stringent levels for buses and heavy vehicles. Finally, the position adopted also establishes new provisions for the minimum life of batteries. The one launched is not yet the EU's overall position:the proposal will now be subjected to the so-called trilogue, i.e. inter-institutional negotiations with the Commission and the Council (the member states).

The right toasts the agreement

The rapporteur of the measure, the Czech Alexandr Vondra of the Ecr group, the one of the conservative right who refers to Giorgia Meloni, celebrated the agreement by claiming that the assembly had thus «successfully achieved a balance between environmental objectives and the vital interests of producers», and added:«It would be counterproductive to implement environmental policies that harm both European industry and its citizens.Through our compromise, we serve the interests of all parties involved and move away from extreme positions."The Italian government is also satisfied with the drop point. For the contents of the measure, but also for the political signal. For Adolfo Urso the one obtained yesterday is "a success for Italy" and a "clear and significant turning point compared to the Commission's initial proposal, which responds to a concrete and pragmatic vision".But the political meaning of the vote is also significant, because as the Minister of Business and Made in Italy observed, this saw the formation of "a new centre-right political majority" in the European Parliament. The so-called "Ursula majority" that has governed the assembly for the last 4 years, in fact (popular-socialist-liberals), was split over the provision:the Ecr, Ppe and Renew groups and a good part of the Id group, the one to which the League is part, voted in favor of the proposal.

There are those who say no

The socialists instead split:the majority of the group, including the PD delegation, voted against because they were in favor of a more ambitious text than the one approved. Also against the compromise reached are the Greens, who speak of a "missed opportunity" and the Beuc, the European consumer organisation, according to which the new regulation "is closer to a minimum update of Euro 6 than to a new generation of rules on emissions".
