Having brought home this 'victory', Lav would now like the vegetable meal to become a weekly basis. And warns parents:"Whoever wants it can request it every day."

ROME – In the school canteens of the Municipality of Rome, once a month, once a month will be served”a completely plant-based meal“, balanced and consistent with the guidelines set by the ministry for school meals. The decision was approved by the Capitol with a 'council memorandum', which includes a commitment to introduce a green menu for school boys and girls. This step was requested and urged by Lav, the Anti-Vivisection League, which is part of the Rome Food Council and which had been aiming to achieve this goal for two years. And he would like to make the menu vegetarian weekly and not monthly.“A positive step that Lav applauds, the first – we hope – for a 100% plant-based meal at least once a week,” comments Domiziana Illengo, national manager of Lav plant-based nutrition.

The result obtained, continues Illengo, "demonstrates the commitment of the Department and the Administration, after more than two years of solicitations with our 'Green Challenge' campaign, to want to modify the school lunch system in the direction of food transition and greater ethical and environmental awareness, hoping that it will be implemented as quickly as possible."Lav recalls that the guidelines for school catering of the Ministry of Health and the Minimum Environmental Criteria (Cam) suggest "an ever-increasing consumption of vegetable products and a consequent reduction of those of animal origin“.The initiative, proposed by Lav also within the Rome Food Council, and supported by other associations present in it, was presented at the meeting held in July, which was also attended by the school councilor Claudia Pratelli and now, thanks to the approval of the Council Memorandum, it becomes part of the work of the entire Administration.

THE WORK:“YOU CAN ASK FOR THE VEGETABLE MEAL EVERY DAY”

Illengo concludes:“This decision, as well as being an important first step forward in the fight against climate change and to protect animals and our health, it also allows us to remember that it is always possible for all parents to choose an entirely plant-based meal every day, signing the appropriate request at the school or municipality of reference.Where supporting medical certification is requested - concludes Illengo - this is not to be considered mandatory pursuant to the national guidelines of the Ministry of Health".
