In the near future along the Italian highways “mega-trucks” could appear.Like those that cross the United States or Canada.Of the sorts of long, lying buildings up to 25 meters and which can also weigh 60 tons.
The draft directive received 330 votes in favor and 207 against
A solution to streamline the traffic and for optimize the movement of goods, according to i 330 European parliamentarians who voted in favor of the draft directive.A stupidity for the 207 who tried, in vain, to oppose.According to the latter, it would have been wiser to maintain the current limitations, equal to 18.75 meters in length and 40 tonnes of weight.
The speaker, the Spanish socialist Isabel Garcia Muñoz, believes that this is an effective choice, since in this way each truck can transport 50 to 75 percent more goods compared to current trucks.Furthermore, the Brussels Commission believes that "mega-trucks" will contribute to reducing costs by around 1.2 percent. CO2 emissions linked to road transport without passengers, in the period from 2025 to 2050.
The only certain advantage will be the economic one for transport companies
Questionable calculations, according to MEPs ecologists:“Who can seriously imagine that mega-trucks powered by Diesel, weighing 60 tons, will they be able to allow us to reduce emissions related to trucks by 90 percent between now and 2050?”, asked the French European parliamentarian Karima Delli. For this reason i Greens and the left had tried to oppose it, proposing some amendments which were however rejected by the Chamber.
The real advantage, certainly, will be for the companies that deal with road freight transport. For them, savings of over the next quarter of a century are expected 45 billion euros.
The conflicting arguments will recur when the draft directive is discussed among the member countries of the European Union. Some nations appear inclined to ask that the regulation not be approved, underlining how it is more important to change the mode of transport itself, favoring the railway one.
The European Council will decide in June on "mega-trucks"
There are also those who raise questions related to road safety:the space needed for brake for much longer and much heavier trucks it would increase considerably. And also the so-called “dead corner” in which it is not possible for the driver to have visibility, it would be wider.
The European Council (i.e. the member countries) will adopt their position on this matter in the next June.It will therefore be the new parliamentary assembly, after the elections scheduled for the same month, that will eventually finalize the text of the directive.
