Alternative proteins:cultured beef on sale in Israel by the end of the year

Israel's Health Ministry said the approval came as part of a pilot program on research into alternative proteins to meet the growing demand for products of non-living origin. The meat was deemed safe after examination toxicology, allergens, nutritional composition, microbiological and chemical safety, as well as the production process up to packaging.

The startup still has to go through a bureaucratic process before the products are available for purchase, but it aims to launch the product on the market by the end of 2024 with a cost similar to premium category packaged beef, a price that it hopes to lower in the future.

The production of cultured beef

To produce the cultured beef Aleph Farm used stem cells of one Californian Black Angus cow which are fermented in bioreactors. The fact of taking them from a fertilized egg rather than from muscle tissue cells allowed the startup's meat to be declared kosher, or produced in compliance with Jewish religious rules.Based in Rehovot, Aleph Farms has among its investors personalities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, but also multinationals of traditional meat as Cargill, and the Israeli government. It's part of a Israeli startup hub engaged in the development of food technology for the production of alternative proteins, such as meat, but also milk, fish and eggs.
