Everyday life influences the language.Forever.Thus, the terms and neologisms of the spoken language also enter into what is still, despite modern times, the main instrument that dictates the language, the dictionary. The best known of the Italian language is certainly lo Zingarelli of the publishing house Zanichelli which in its 2025 edition announced some neologisms very current.
Neologisms in Zingarelli 2025
Among the new terms in the digital update of Zingarelli 2025, the one that catches our eye the most is overtourism because it is a phenomenon that we at LifeGate have also talked about for a long time. The forthcoming dictionary defines it as “overcrowding caused by an excessive influx of tourists to a location”.Many others, however, come from careful monitoring of speech, especially among young people. Here are some:
- stoned it is the condition of complete dizziness caused by the intake of drugs or alcohol
- maranza it's a term that was born in the 1980s, now back in vogue, which indicates a forced, a tamarro or a person belonging to gangs of boys who harasses people on the streets
- hype it is not just an aggressive marketing strategy but it is actually a strong interest, often excessive or fleeting, around something or someone or, in the language of social media, being the center of attention
- escape rooms it is a board game in which the participants, often young and very young, locked up in a specially equipped environment, must solve puzzles to find a way to get out, in a pre-established time and in collaboration with each other
Among the terms coming from the world of television there is gieffino which indicates a competitor of the show Big Brother - which is actually much less popular now, also because it has been on the air for 24 years - who usually almost always also becomes a media figure and therefore known to the general public.
Scanning the online world the word emerged catfishing which occurs especially in love relationships, when a story develops with one of the two hiding their identity or more generally it is the activity of those who use a false identity on social media with the aim of deceiving or swindling others.
It is difficult to pronounce and write shrinkflation, a term which in Italian can be translated with the expression "sgrammatura" which derives from the union of the words shrink (restrict) and inflation (inflation) and is the deceptive commercial expedient which consists in reducing the quantity of product in a package leaving the price unchanged.
In the food sector we find the bubble tea, widespread especially among young people, a mostly fresh and thirst-quenching drink of Taiwanese origin, based on tea, milk and tapioca pearls that are chewed while sipping.
Zanichelli herself declared that in this new edition of the famous dictionary there is greater attention to a more inclusive terminology, for a more complete awareness of reality.
